If someone is unfamiliar with Japanese and Mandarin, they’re not going to be able to readily distinguish the two in writing. They don’t know, for example, that Japanese intersperses the Kanji with Kana, while Mandarin uses the hanzi logograms exclusively. But Chinese characters are very distinct from Latin or other Western writing systems, so if they see a sample containing Hanzi/Kanji, they’ll jump to whatever they’re familiar with.

I imagine a Chinese person with little to no exposure to Western writing would easily mistake French and English because they share so many words, even though they’re not closely related (Romance vs Germanic).

Can’t help you with music but I share your frustration when it comes to being suckered into consuming AI slop. My entire adult life, text to speech has been a constant part of my day, so I pride myself on being able to sniff out when the person talking isn’t a person.

Even with these AI voices I’ll eventually catch an odd stutter or wonky prosody, but it may take a good minute or more of listening, and when I do figure it out I feel like I’ve been scammed.

I get what you’re saying but I think your analogy kinda backfired, at least on me specifically. For a good 20 years there was this unused plot of land near me that we played around in as kids, but it eventually got turned into a municipal pocket park, and now instead of just teens smoking there are kids playing on the playground, people playing various sports, jogging and cycling on the track, grilling at the pavilions. I still use it, too, just in a different way from when I was a kid.

But in the above case the community gained tremendously from the change. Reddit going public, especially all the stuff it did to get there like the APIcolypse, is only making the experience worse. That’s enshittification. The users give stuff up without getting anything in return. All the extra ads aren’t paying for new features, in fact they’re taking them away. I would have gone crazy for the JSON (interface? API? IDK the correct term) but didn’t know it existed until the announcement that they killed it a few days ago. They also got rid of private messages and (really petty IMO) subscriber counts on the old site.

Since you’re just sharing things within a small group, I think it’s safe to give out your IP or a domain pointing to it. However, you need to put your services behind a DMZ. Make a separate VLAN on your network and put the Pis behind it. Make sure traffic from your private LAN can enter the DMZ but nothing from the DMZ can go to your LAN unless it’s return traffic for a session started in your LAN. If a machine in your DMZ is compromised, it shouldn’t affect your LAN.

I’m gonna sound like everyone I complain about here, so feel free to ignore me. How did Proxmox break? I’ve been hosting a bunch of Proxmox containers on a 15 year old crappy laptop and it’s been smooth sailing for at least a year and a half.

Not trying to shun you for using windows or discount your personal experience with Proxmox or anything, just genuinely curious. If you prefer windows, use it.

Are you hosting on win server? I’m genuinely curious, not trying to shill Linux though I prefer it on the server side, believe me I’ve been on the receiving end of that for desktop Linux. How do you manage it? Do you have your home LAN set up as an active directory domain? Do you use mostly Powershell or the GUI? What do you have running on it? It just seems like everything on the server side assumes you’re using Linux and the only stuff that runs on Win server is stuff made by Microsoft like MS SQL server or IIS.

I just noticed that Lemmy defaults to showing you a feed of all local communities when you open the homepage instead of subscriptions. There doesn’t seem to be a way to change that. I’m bombarded with the ragebait and doomerism that suffuses typical Lemmy discourse as soon as I open the homepage, and I have to click a button to tell the server “now show me what I actually want to see”.

Yes I know you can block communities, but maintaining a list of blocked instances, comms, and users feels like playing a game of whack-a-mole. If people here were more chill I might feel differently, but the rage shows up in the weirdest places you’d never expect, and not even in an organic way.

It’s such a tiny change, but I think defaulting to showing a user’s subscriptions rather than the local feed, only falling back to local if the user isn’t signed in or if the user has no subscriptions, would make a huge difference.

The OP was copy-pasted from my post here with some clarifying edits. And you can gather from my other post on this community that “just going back to Reddit” isn’t something I want.

Also, information hygiene here is terrible. No mods seem to care.

I think a combo of better moderation and a larger and more diverse user base is what Lemmy needs to succeed. The former is hard to achieve because you have to straddle the line between too lax and too strict, and everyone’s going to have a different idea where that line is. I get the feeling people just copy-pasted all the popular subreddits without enforcing the rules that gave each sub its identity. Askreddit was about open-ended questions meant to elicit discussion or shared experiences. Nostupidquestions was about seeking information. Showerthoughts was about quick realizations or observations. Mildlyinteresting was about odd little coincidences or anomalies you run into going about your day. But here on Lemmy there’s no quality control so they’re all filled with varying degrees of ragebait.

Growing the user base is even harder because the “politics is everything” folks repel any normal human being who just wants to talk about Pokemon.

Honestly I don’t think so. I want the fediverse to grow, but the vibe here can be exhausting sometimes. Whenever I say I can’t use Linux because I’m blind I get a bunch of downvotes. Whenever I say I’d love to talk about cats or vintage computers without someone bringing up Trumpa-Lumpa in the comments I get shouted down as well. I can’t imagine Joe Social Media User wanting to be around people like that. I could say a ton more but I’ve rehashed it elsewhere.

And that’s not getting into the (comparatively) high friction nature of first choosing an instance to sign up to. Heck, I didn’t understand how the fediverse worked for a while, and I’m in IT. The world is full of people who don’t have that background that will find the very concept impenetrable.

You’re on to something. I think it started out like a lot of Reddit clones (anyone remember voat?) where a huge chunk of the user base are people who got banned from Reddit or were otherwise on the fringe. This core of crazies repels anyone else who just wants to chill and talk about shared interests, making the user base even crazier overtime.
