I got an Orwellian warning from those motherfuckers at Reddit that said I upvote too many posts that “glorify violence”(!?!?). I guess because I believe all Nazis can die?

I’m finally out for good. If they want a safe space for the loser racists at /r/conservative they can have it!

X became a nazi safe-space ever since musk bought it. He never even tried to hide it. And now that he’s doing literal salut and openly supporting far-right nazi german party, lots of people are still like “mmm let’s not overreact, he’s just socially akward”. Anyone who’s still on X or didn’t sell their tesla is a nazi-enabler, period.

Yeah, big time fuck reddit vibes over here. Had been a member for… um… like 18 years? Posting for 15 (I only know that for sure because I lost my original acct because Google are shitheads, but I can search the old username and see all of my 20 something (age) comments if I so desire. 😅). When fElon Must started talking about redditors being terrorists was the final straw, and I meticulously deleted every comment (thousands and thousands) I ever made, had like 100,000 comment karma 😔 and then deleted my acct. There is no publicly visible record my newer acct ever existed now. I miss how it used to be back in the aughts, was a seriously special place back then. The bots, and morons just got to be too much tho. I was dealing, but the last thing I’m willing to go down for is a shit load of benign but honest anti trump and must comments, freedom of speech my ass. It’s uterly insane what’s gone down in the last couple months in America. Just fucking bizarro world shit, tbs.

i had one for 11-12 years for sole purpose for a nintendo game, then i forgot i made various throwaways and sub specific accts, to avoid invasive bans, personally thier bans are way to harsh for the slightest mishapp, it all started with trump the first time around, he just made every site too overly sensitive on what they can ban. not only were they targeting “conservative trolls” but now you cant even imply “something should happen” to said gop, conservative. my funniest response i got was, your not allowed to use “black, or demographic, because that sounds racist” also if you accidentally use the wrong word like “her or him on a transgendered person”. while when trolls imply violence on "left leaning " people they almost never get removed or dont eradicate that behaviour.

I’m sure that is exactly what it means. The point was to hide it a little bit, it’s not the standard first.last of everyone else but to make it still uniquely identifiable as musk. It’s not a completely unheard of practice to hide potential high spam targets. The goal isn’t to completely hide, just make it slightly harder to find

This is why scraping LinkedIn works so well. Using the consistent email format gets you to your target easily. I’ve used it to get the contact info of the CTO of American Airlines before (his auto-reply included his cell number.)

No it does not. Neither does having a password as they can be leaked or cracked or who knows what. Turning off tcmp echo on your router won’t stop all bad actors but it will stop some. All security practices are just small steps to make it slightly harder for bad actors.

There is no such thing as perfect security, but there’s a big difference between trying to obscure something confidential between two parties (a password) and trying to obscure information that by design must be shared with other parties (an email address).

Outside of diligently using disposable alias addresses, obscuring an email is an exercise in futility. The biggest point of failure in security is the human, and all it takes is a single person to leak it. With all the people that need to communicate with Musk over email, the opportunity for that to happen is far higher than the chance of something like someone successfully cracking a hash.

I 100% agree with you. But I’ll also admit that I email people ALL the time and I have no idea what their email alias is. I just hit reply.

I absolutely agree with you that even with a rotation musk’s email alias will get leaked. I’m just agreeing with you that it was security through obscurification and it would have worked if one of the emails got leaked. A thousand people would have tried variations of elon.musk@ i am willing to bet none of them would have tried erm71@

And let’s face it that man has an auto forward on his email lmao

And why not? You forget there is beauty in brevity.

A breach is a breach is a breach is a breach. You’d be criticizing his choice whether it was 5 simple characters or 500. When you K.I.S.S. it makes it easier to remember AND quicker to enter, access. I had to choose a password for work once, and I made it a little complex…work constantly logged me out 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄…I had to enter that stupid fucking password so many fucking times, yes, it was secure. It was also DUMB and FRUSTRATING. Next 3 passwords were far simpler to repeatedly type in; I learned my lesson.

Same with Apple always auto-generating stupid passwords, I hope you never have to type them in! It’s just dumb, as illustrated by XKCD.

XKCD also has a suggestion for strong, memorable, easy passwords.

Be smart. Make life simple. Don’t do stupid things. 🫡

My rule: If I can’t easily write nor remember a daily password, it is crap. My strong passwords are kept in a offline password manager, which has a relatively weak master password in the vein of “R!seaboveit@ll”. Not ideal, but at least a human can type it.

The real danger is going to be websites leaking or sharing the individual password it is given. So long as no one knows your (offline) manager’s pass, the threat can be cordoned off. Unfortunately, we can expect the integration of AI into OS ecosystems to make that method vulnerable. Say, for example, Microsoft’s Copilot or Google’s Android.

Ha, son of a bitch. That is almost exactly what I do. 😆

There are always vulnerabilities; you can’t make things truly secure, you only make them less insecure.

All my passwords are longer & stronger, XKCD method, easy to read & type. Granted I don’t have Apple or my password manager generating gibberish passwords for me, takes 20 seconds each, I think them up. Maybe you should try it, too, idk. Leave the gibberish behind. I’m so glad I did.

To save everyone time, here’s a draft set of productivity bullets for “turtle tester”:

        • Conducted thorough evaluations of turtle shell durability and structural integrity under various simulated environmental conditions.
        • Monitored and recorded turtle behavior to assess mobility and adaptability in controlled habitats.
        • Ensured all testing procedures adhered to ethical standards and guidelines for animal welfare.
        • Collaborated with team members to analyze data and improve testing methodologies for accuracy and efficiency.
        • Prepared detailed weekly reports summarizing findings and providing actionable recommendations for ongoing research.

It’s important Elon Musk knows these things.

    [Removed by Reddit]

Been a minute since I’ve seen that. And that’s actually one huge advantage of the Fediverse. There can’t be a [Removed by Lemmy] because ‘Lemmy’ is a federation of servers with their own rules and regulations and aren’t even all based in the USA. And if any server starts these shenanigans, you can just move to another.

Although I do wish that profiles and comment history could be preserved from one server to another. That’s basically the last piece of the puzzle that would give the user a completely a completely free experience.

Nah, There’s other ways to store data while preserving confidentiality, integrity and availability that isn’t on the blockchain. Besides A public ledger connected to a specific profile could make it easier for the profile to be doxxed/fingerprinted.

Spitballing here but a service using simple key-pairs might be a better way to do this.

        • Users generate a key pair client-side.

        • Public key is stored on the server, acting as the user’s identity.

        • To update their profile, users sign the request with their private key. (Data is signed/verified client side before submission)

        • The server verifies the signature using the stored public key before edits can be made.

Because data signature/verification are done client side theoretically you don’t need a ledger, your client can enforce profile state. (Maybe an HMAC is sent with the verified data and there reverted periodically by the client)

Just public key cryptography. All your actual posts and comment history are already shared. What is missing is a way to authenticate yourself to anyone but your home server. If the protocol included every profile having a public key, you could then use that to authenticate to any server. And managing that private key is no more complicated than managing your private key in a block chain context.

Non public info like subscriptions is a bit more complicated, because there is an actual policy question of who you share it with. You would either need to make it publicly available, keep a copy yourself, or have your home instance give it to you/the other server at the time you want to migrate.

Yeah it’s nice to be able to import your list of subscriptions at least. But for comment history, I guess it depends what you’re getting out of a place like this. On Reddit, I liked going back sometimes and seeing what I was posting a couple of years ago. Especially if it’s personal shit, or even old review posts for movies or whatever. I like having a stable online presence or identity with a history to refer to.

Just allow people to bring their own IDs to servers. Self sovereign IDs, or SSI for short.

Blockchain has a usecase here, and it would be for disabling your ID in case of privkey leak, or for having people or entities strengthen or verify your pubkey or tie a hash of your birth certificate to it.

Blockchains are great for providing reliable immutable and verifiable timestamps of data. The reason they are safe is because a lot of people have tied actual value to it, and thus most don’t want to invalidate the blockchain and destroy their value.
