Cris_Citrus (he/him <3)

I like art and being nice to people on the internet. At least most of the time. My previous account was Cris_Color before changing instances

Queer, gender-messy twink. Into crafts. Learning how to care for plants. Nerdy about fish and aquariums.

  • While I usually find myself agreeing that linguistic prescriptivism is useless (it is), that generally applies less to terms that have technical or academic meaning, and just lumping progressive and liberal into meaning the same thing completely takes away our ability to discuss one of two dominant political ideologies in the united states

People regularly conflating things doesnt mean we should all just conflate things because thats what they now mean, thats a horrible way to apply the idea of linguistic descriptivism 😅

People on lemmy use the term liberal to mean liberal and not progressive because half the conversations here are completely impossible sans language for the dominant “progressive” political ideology in the US that embraces capitalism and superficially supports minority interests.

  • Hey blaze, I haven’t seen you around for a bit ☺️ thanks for the instance reccomendations a while back when I switched from Cris_Color; I’m appreciating the no-fuss out of the way approach to moderation and governance from the .zip folks!

Yeah, I think I should probably sit down and do that at some point, it’d be nice to be able to step in and out of the news as I please

Hope you have a lovely day!

  • I get the impression the threadiverse is a very white space and to me, white people’s opinion on what feels appropriative seems unlikely to have as much perspective as you might want if the question matters to you. If there are folks you’re close with who it’d make sense to ask and are black, they might be a better crowd to ask. Or even a different part of the internet.

I think in general when you’re wondering how people feel about something you need to talk to the affected people. Thats easiest when you have relationships where you know thats welcome, or if you go to a space where it is actively invited.

Maybe the folks answering are giving good answers rooted in perspective though- as some random white guy I wouldn’t know short of asking someone else. Honestly my read on the demographics of the platform could be off too. Being that it’s a somewhat anonymous feeling version of social media you don’t have a great sense for who’s answering your post and what kind of perspective they’re speaking from 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • I absolutely agree, I am also a leftist but constantly stewing in political news isn’t good for your head, or even in a practical sense good for your ability to go actually get involved in stuff outside. You have to take care of yourself if you want emotional energy with which to do any real political labor

I wish we could come up with some collective strategy to create better balance cause this platform tends to share politics as common ground, and with not many people here that means a lot of what gets posted and engaged with is all just news and politics.

And yes, I know everything is political. AND, you need to be able to step away from the politics of the world and catch your breath and be mentally well. Any one thing dominating your time and emotional energy can become unhealthy quickly, especially when its all bad news or small victories that remind you of the broken bigger picture.

Balance is important. I’m thinking about creating a seperate account and blocking all the political communities and filtering by keywords so I can just be here for hobbies and folks chatting when I want that
