Your question is not stupid, but it is overly vague and broad. An equally vague and broad answer would be: "They did their best with the tools and knowledge they had, tried to copy other cartographer’s work (and failing that, their techniques), and otherwise just guessed. Failingthat, they made it up in ways that would benefit themselves the most.

I love Akira but Kaneda has serious plot armor. He gets shot at by soldiers with automatic weapons countless times and survives. That and the collapsing buildings, psychics, and other hazards he just shrugs off. Meanwhile, Chiyoko gets stabbed by some random scumbag.

I tend to trust experts in their field because, well, imagine the alternatives.

PvP is inherently not repetitive due to the fact you will be interacting with many many different people over your gameplay sessions. And people are random, inconsistent, and weird.

Also, some people like honing a particular skill. It’s not really about being afraid to try new things, but rather trying to be better at one thing.
