And you’re fucking wrong. We don’t need the sterility of traditional social media because that only existed in the first place to be advertiser-friendly.

You aren’t better, more correct, or more valid because you play the respectability politics game, you’re just bitter that the game isn’t as effective here without the incentive of advertiser-friendliness to wield as a cudgel.

Either grow up and learn to meet people where they are instead of expecting people to play by and cater to your personal preferences, or fuck right off.

Get a thicker skin. The world is not designed to cater to your specific sensibilities. Taking a shitty opinion and gussying it up in pretty language isn’t some magic spell that makes you immune to push back, and the fact that some people are less than polite doesn’t invalidate their response.

You want to be able to push buttons with your edgy “it’s just a debate bro” opinions while being spared impassioned responses. Too fucking bad, bro. Either man up and get thick enough skin to wade in the water or stay the fuck off the beach.

  • That’s probably true, but it’s worth noting that not all of the Rimu controversy is coming from tankies. I’m arguably pretty “moderate” for the fediverse and I and many others like me also find their conduct and software worthy of concern.

The way I see it, our options are this:

Lemmy, a neutral software developed and ran by people with some questionable politics that they keep separate from but hosted on Lemmy.

Or Piefed, a software with ideology built directly into it developed by people with probably much more palatable politics (for me at least) but who believes said politics should be systemic in the fediverse.

Tbh, I don’t 100% love either of these options, but I have no interest in trading overbearing corporate nannys for a homegrown farm-to-table nanny. I’m an adult, I don’t need or want somebody else dictating sensibilities for me.

    So Lemmy it is.

  • Tbh, I know this will be a hot take, but I do think Tiktok is a vastly better network. Tumblr too. These are still actual social media platforms.

Yes, they’re deeply algorithm-based, yes they’re for-profit, capitalist networks still, but I think they are miles better than FB/Insta or Twitter/X. Have you looked at somebody’s Facebook? 90%+ of posts are corporate, political, special interest. Almost nobody actually posts anything, they just reshare an endless stream of garbage content entirely divorced from the human experience.

At least Tiktok, despite its many legitimate problems and criticisms, is still largely a human-driven platform. It’s still a place where people are making, sharing, and consuming real human posts in the interest of connection.

Tiktok is still social media. I genuinely don’t think FB or X have been social media in many many years.
