  • Hi Cowbee, I see your posts on here often and appreciate your patience and thoroughly explained takes. I am curious your take on another issue tangentially related to this.

I understand a lot of the appeal of China from a leftist perspective, but one of the things I struggle most with is their imperial ambitions with regard to Taiwan. This is less based on us propaganda and more based on a few trips I have made there and friends who live there, who frequently express concern over a Chinese functional takeover. When I last talked with them, as far as that got was China functionally sponsoring political campaigns for Taiwanese candidates who agreed to campaign on unification with China. Even with the financial backing, these candidates are still consistently voted down by the Taiwanese people, a clear statement to me about their lack of desire to be part of China. As it is, I would view any effort to make Taiwan part of China as against the will of the Taiwanese people and view China as dabbling with imperialism here, which is obviously not aligned with leftist values.

Bonus second question, the most common refrain I hear from liberals about China is regarding the Uyghur genocide. I don’t know very much about this so struggle to make any effective counterpoint beyond pointing out US genocides over the years. Is your opinion that this is all propaganda and doesn’t happen? Or just overblown? Or what?

  • When I first switched to Linux 18 months ago everyone raved that mint is the easiest most user friendly windows like operating system and I would be best of using that one.

I hated mint, and having now done 12ish total Linux installs I have enjoyed everything else I have used significantly more. Anything running kde plasma seems to actually be the most windows like for new users, best I can tell.

  • The real honest answer is it depends. Almost nothing in terms of food is universally better or worse. Calorically, Palm tends to be higher, with some exceptions (due to higher water content in butter). Palm can be made with a ton of different levels of saturation, which is why it’s popular in manufacturing (also cost), but how saturated makes a huge difference to how bad it is for you and doesn’t need to be labeled. Then there is consideration for natural occurrence of positive vitamins and minerals in some fat sources, or the perceived negative impacts of relatively more processed or less processed fats. Then peoples individual biology’s make some choices better than others for them personally.

The most general advice I can give is pay less attention to the source of the fat and more to the nutrition facts call-out for saturated fat (more=bad), from a purely health perspective. From a purely taste perspective, for pies butter and lard are more premium fats and all other sat fats are worse

  • Avoiding ai content isn’t exactly a choice I can make currently. On virtually every streaming app, if I use any kind of recommendation or auto play function, ai comes up. Because AI music creators tend to release literally thousands of songs vs human creators who release a handful, even if the algorithms are randomized between available options, it skews heavily towards ai content.

So, yes, I want the owners of those platforms to remove the AI content altogether rather than just put a small icon in the corner of the song name or whatever.

Letting users choose for themselves isn’t exactly what is happening. Forced feeding of garbage would be more accurate.
