Ooh, thanks for this. Yeah, I got confused by the pricing page

Thanks for the input! Yeah, I haven’t heard of any bad experience with them. Maybe I just need to take the leap of faith. Although the ownership change recently was a bit concerning but it seems like the operation quality hasn’t reduced

I checked it out, looks like they don’t support catch all and have an artifical limitation on “aliases”
For me, I think I would like to have catch all working without paying too much

Which email host do you use? I can’t decide which one to go for. I want something like migadu but they seem a bit scary with their message limits. The other option I have in mind is purelymail but I don’t know if I trust them yet

For sure, I also believe that’s how one learns and gets better. But the point was that I could see why someone might be frustrated over losing in chess :)

Very true. But I guess this same thing could cause frustration to people because they would take it personally and feel bad about themselves for losing

In case someone comes across this and doesn’t know, “forking” a repo by just clicking that button on github won’t preserve your copy if the upstream repo gets taken down. If you’re trying to preserve it, make sure you have a copy independent of github’s control. Like a local backup

Me too. But it refuses to load images of a fraction of the posts and I don’t really know why. And cross linking to some other instances is occasionally borked, it tries and then opens the browser.
Apart from that it’s been fantastic
Rather go with guix os which actually is based on a sane language and has stronger security/reproducibility measures. Not to mention a much more pleasant community

Hmmm, I’m a bit rusty on this but can’t one put an auth gate in front of the application, handled by the reverse proxy?
I’m confused. What’s the difference between mastodon and other such platforms mentioned in this thread? I thought these mastodon like platforms were the equivalent of twitter on the fediverse

This sounds not right? Don’t you need to unclench to release stuff?

Just wanted to add that Debian officially offers live GUI installers with a bunch of DEs just like other mainstream distributions :)
Networking isn’t my strong suit, so this might be a stupid question. But what exactly is a hardware firewall? Is it the same thing as my Internet facing router blocking incoming packets which haven’t been requested from “inside the home” network?

Wow, great post. I was mildly annoyed by all the piefed shenanigans from non compliance with activitypub but this really is quite eye opening
For all his great work on Linux (and git and others) Torvalds was never into activism so much. He declined GPLv3 (yes it would be impossible to get all contributors to sign for it). He’s always been an “open source pragmatist”, which is fine I guess. And I really respect his work. But at these important political points, we need someone like Stallman who has consistently proven to be on the right side of the debate
