Lol nothing says we are afraid of the working class like banning subreddits on suppressed news they don’t want us to see. I came here bc I got a warning on my account for liking a comment that said “Luigi”. My alt account got banned for sharing the DOGE email list that is public info. Fuck Reddit. I’m done.

Man the censorship is just vile too. It’s not like “Oh this incites violence” it’s “anything and everything that we and our shareholders don’t agree on is gone”.

Worst part is if any other countries went after them then they would just restrict it to US news.

Classic capitalist gotcha. Turns out that prioritizing shareholders (a 3rd party leech entity unrelated to the operations or customers) is always going to lead to censorship. Like the generic “shareholder” needs stable status quo to figure out how to exploit the poors in most efficient way and violent revolt doesn’t guarantee a higher than inflation result. Modern capitalism in America is straight up a mental disorder similar to hoarding. You don’t need the money nor the stock but you’re willing to fuck over literally thousands of people for a minor gain. It should be studied … but studying this doesn’t help the bottom line so fuck any progress it’s death and destruction for %% daily return. Fuck all this

Seeing that non-right sided medias are picking this up is good. Hopefully it builds more traction and if they can even say something as simple as “Lemmy is an alternative” we can see healthy growth. I know r/conservative is probably loving it but in the last month I’ve seen them advocate for more violence than any other subreddits. Yet they remain free and open. Gotta love how contradicting reddit has become since the blackout.

After 12 years and over 900K Karma, I got permanently banned for repeating an opinion that I’ve posted many times over the past decade. Then Trump gets elected, and the exact same opinion gets me a permaban.

Now I’m hearing that they are banning people for UPVOTES! I wondered why Reddit had decided to throw in with the Nazis, and I this week I see in the news that Ohanion wants to buy TikTok. The new owner of TikTok will be personally chosen by HitlerPig, so Zuckerfuck has been kissing up, and now Ohanion wants in on it. HitlerPig will award it to whomever kisses his ass and pays him the most.

That’s the problem with these corporations — the foundation is rotten, and they have no principles beyond more money. It has been this way for some time.

Now, we have an economy where the arbitrary whims of billionaires and our king is the main determinant of their share price. This is how Reddit kisses the boot.

Somehow the complexity of using Lemmy compared to other social media sites and the decentralized nature of it has really gotten rid of the trollfarms and bot spam to a pretty good extent. I realize now that Reddit has such an insane amount of bad-faith actors that cause the site to be so toxic, same with all other mainstream social media.

I saw someone in a reddit thread about Lemmy earlier complaining that it wasn’t “user friendly” enough because someone posted an infograph on how the Fediverse works. Even though all the infograph was explaining was that you log into one instance and can freely interact with the rest from there…

I’ve always thought the internet should be more decentralized and being able to log in without seeing tons of bots, reposts and propaganda is literally the best aspect of Lemmy for me. This feels like what social media was meant to be. I wish there was an easier way to get people to understand that.

We definitely have our own bots and spam problems. Instance admins work diligently to keep the situation under control, and so far, they’ve been pretty successful. I’ve seen a few waves of it in my almost 2 years here.

Clearly they’re pissed that people are still using the site. They’ve made efforts to stop it by making shit redesigns, releasing a shitty app, user profiles, shutting off the API and trying to force people to use their shit app.

They must be seething that people are still using it and they’ve found a new way to try to get people to stop. I honestly think it’s some weird plot to take humanity back to a puritanical society.

          Think about it.

All major websites are censoring language and content that could even remotely be construed as adult-friendly or “harmful”; the fact so many US states are outright banning porn sites (I know it’s like a hydra, but the point still stands); the entire world is sliding right back into fascism; I even feel like Hollywood is stepping away from things like violence and vulgarity.

It’s all a fucking sham and I fucking hate it. Let us swear; let us jack off to the weird shit we want to jack off too; just let people be people.

Why does there have to be a small but extremely powerful subset of people who can run the entire world and dictate what the rest of us can and can’t do?

The thing about the puritans were that they had harsh rules that existed to try to keep their flock from sinning. They failed as such things always fail.
A good example of a common practice from the time was that part of the pay of a young man working on another mans farm was the bed of their eldest daughter at night. It made identifying the father of the child easier.

This one practice alone made the puritans a lot more rational than this current cancer on society.

I think maybe the problem is that places like Reddit were essentially a “third place.” It just happens to be a virtual one. You can’t monetize a place, unless you also provide a good or a service. a restaurant at least provides food and drinks. bowling alleys provide games and food and drink. What does reddit provide aside from the place? Other than annoyances such as Ads, 1984 level moderation, etc.

Attention Extraction modeling. Thats how social media platforms monetize. I started working what the same kind of technologies but it was to predict how clients should customize their products to tailor behavior input. These corpations trade in behavior modifaction and RTD auction with political clients. A good example when it goes wrong is the Myanmar /Facebook masssacre.

Agree. You wont find any one working in the tech industry that allows their family or friends use social media platforms. You will find that almost every day to day apps, (linkedin, whatsapp, instagram, Facebook, snapchat, reddit, pinterest, etcetera), contributes to the polarization that we see more and more of today. Some of these work together but often it is a big competition of who can get your attention. And their are addictive. Alternatives would have to be completly opposite and decentralized…unfortunely we will be stuck with these for a real long time.

Basically every region of the world you will find division among the populations due to different perceptions of reality. For instance, when you search for the same keywords as me, we will get different either suggestions in the auto complete or different search results, even though we both could be in the same city. You can see this patterns where ever they are allowed, (China for instance banned many of them because of this), its called microtargeting.

Reddit may actually be doing a lot of people a big favor.

Today Trump’s DHS went out and arrested a Palestinian student at Columbia for participating at a protest a year prior. Our federal agents are becoming like the KGB- hunting down political dissidents.

I believe that is just a start. I think people would be wise to be careful about the things they post online. If you do post content you believe the administration may not like, I suggest making an anonymous account with an email not linked to your personal name.

I have a hunch that people will be arrested in the near future for posting things online.

Well… that’s just going to be most American sites going forward. That’s why ultimately platforms like Lemmy are so important. What a lot of people here in the States don’t realize is that this is a war on information.

I’m not entirely certain to be honest. It was 25 years ago now. Whatever it was, I never went back lol

Edit: looking back since it made me curious, likely something to do with them going public back then.

Edit 2: I’m certain that’s what it was, because I remembered Fark was just Drew. That was very appealing during the dot com implosion. So, I moved from the new evil corp to the open source equivalent lol

            I get that.

Was curious as I still read slashdot and find they’re one of the last sites left with comments.

oh yeah, i was still actually reading them too. until recently when they stopped working with ad blocking. when i’m done with a site, i might still visit. but, i remove my accounts and no longer interact. they still have some good conversation and links on occasion.

Oh, my adblocker still blocked their ads. They just started throwing an error a few months ago (i think) that wouldn’t let me continue on the page unless i disabled it. I checked on occasion for a few weeks and it continued. It does look like it might work again, but they have finally lost themselves from my daily workflow lol
