I’m noticing the way that last year’s expenses get covered by this year’s revenue. Maybe they’ll try for some deal around that, and expect the bubble to last forever?

12·2 months agoThat sounds like something we can make an AI agent do, purely out of spite for the argument :p But yes. There is more than a “feedback loop” required.
However, I am conflicted at the idea that a human that does not self-reflect may not be considered “conscious”. I see many a human in retail simply not meet this threshold you’re laying out. And while it would be cathartic to discuss some customers as less human for their behavior, the act of dehumanizing another human is itself dehumanizing for the actor.
Of course, it is possible that you could have some other type of feedback loop that produces self awareness and consciousness, but from what we understand of how LLMs work, it seems highly unlikely that statistical token generation is sufficient for that.
This is where “agentic” models enter the chat. A coherent identity and goal, provided by the user adds an additional layer above the statistical-generation of simple LLMs. This layer can be engineered for persistence, even through malicious means like prompt injection.
As an academic exercise, I propose that some persistent-subset of these AI agents possess the “embodiment” we believe is missing. If all this amounts to is a Proof By Negation? Good, we get somewhere that proves our current AI is not conscious.
Even if quantum cryptography were real, its been proven not to affect symmetric encryption like AES.
Don’t use AES-GCM for your block cypher.
Depends on whether Chinese chipmakers open source their firmware and designs, as the standard is intended to make possible. And if we get more fab-manufacturing than just ASML.
China could invite entire countries into the Chinese ecosystem - fab-manufacturing, chip designs and firmware, chipset standards, manufactured products from the whole array. The economic ecosystem can be introduced, managed, and deployed quickly, end to end, local production to international distribution.
But instead, I suspect China will just be making fabs on other countries’ dirt that are staffed almost exclusively with Chinese labor, bolstering Chinese profits. Its their pattern, and when their diplomatic competition at this scale is the bomb-happy US and Russia, maybe India? China doesn’t need to offer much to be the unquestionable “good guy” in the room.
We could all be doing so much better than this.

Can someone connect me with these National Security Hawks that are for actual privacy and autonomy, instead of their own stupid surveillance states? Because I’m convinced Doctorow is making them up in hopes of inciting their existence.
His pitch of “stealing American Trillions to keep Billions” is enticing and elegant, but flies in the face of All of the political Momentum. I wish to flee to his first country to destroy American Copyright in favor of their own national sovereignty! But not even France is taking this step in declaring “independence” from American Tech.

Anyone else convinced AES-256 is not long enough a but length for full disk encryption anymore? Even the 512-bit schemes are just trying some offset-salts that, with ~10TB I worry about providing close-enough statistical significance for cryptanalysis.
With 100TB drives?! I am less worried and more… convinced its a problem.

Unless you have some Niche webcam or hardware MIDI controller, just about everything is supported out of the box. Unless you wanna dive into Gentoo to start? Its surprisingly simple here.
For deep customizations? There’s manuals. There’s guides where you can do the advanced Gentoo-stuff in the terminal by just copying-and-pasting without a clue what you’re doing or why.
The community is something to be proud of - what we’ve built, what we’ve made.
We’re still working on audio composition type stuff for DJs, but we’ve come a long way. The free stuff you want works better here, and even Photoshop runs great in WINE.
This is why we put /home on a separate partition for reuse on new installs. It saves your users’ files. Your steam, WM, Firefox config, even document files are already basically portable between installs.
And in those files, we may as well put a bash script that does your pacman/apt/dnf/emerge/yay for the everything. This could be easy like with Gentoo or a PITA like with Debian to just scrape from the system right before migration.
Firefox is weird when you hop between distros. Some distros use the LTS (long term stable) version, others use the normal Stable branch… Does Debian still maintain an IceWeasel fork of Firefox? This means you may want to manually copy a folder to a backup location to manually slot it in after the distro-hop. Either way, you want to download a popular privacy-focused user.js file from Github ;)
