Hmm… just found out that the only two video backends that can correctly display 10-bit full color range videos for me are VDPAU and x11, both unavailable on Wayland.

You may have been lucky, but the testing repository is really not meant for daily use.

Noone cares about packages there, so depending on what you have installed and when you update, you might have critical security vulnerabilities that have been patched for weeks on Stable or other incompatibilities/broken dependencies.

Unstable is not meant for daily use either, but at least you brainlessly get pushed the latest updates at all times. I have used it for a while, but it broke on me, too.

If you need newer software, just use Stable with backports or Flatpaks.

sigh To actually answer your question:

Coreboot itself is just init firmware that contains a payload, such as Seabios, GRUB or Tianocore.

Those can have passwords (or also not, Seabios can’t, as far as I’m aware).

There’s a Libreboot site on how to lock down GRUB.

Basically, you have to flash your own config by adding your password hash and replacing the one in the ROM with e.g. cbfstool. It may sound scarier than it is.

Besides having less features than many proprietary BIOSes, I prefer the flexibility of having your own config to play around with. You can also create custom entries to boot fully encrypted RAIDs and such stuff.

(I sighed because many answers were about BIOS passwords not being effective anyway, which, to me, is dog shit, because of course you do not want somebody random to be able to just boot a USB from your device and screw up your system. And no, it does not reset itself when you take out the CMOS battery.)

It’s even “funnier” when they just sightly miss the question, because they glanced over it and thought they had already answered it multiple times, but just post a generic reply that doesn’t actually help with the nuance of the question.

Like, I get it, it’s difficult sometimes and you’re answering people for free, but instead of getting frustrated and not helping anyway, maybe just leave it be.

Why do they hate people asking questions on this site specifically about asking questions?

This is literally what I thought multiple times now after posting questions there.

I have to say that each of the stack-network sites feels a little different. I think it heavily depends on the mods themselves and how they manage it.

For example, I found the AskUbuntu site very accepting, even to broader questions on Linux and hypothetical issues surrounding it.

The Electronics Stackexchange I’ve had mixed experiences. Some were very helpful, but others seemingly demanded that I measure every single component with an oscillator and give them the readings, even listing manufacturer specs wasn’t enough, question closed as “not enough info”.

That’s when I got frustrated, because, why not just leave it open, maybe someone would still be willing to chime in?

This feels weird to me, because I will not use this site as a scientific researcher with a nerwork of equally educated colleagues, but as a hobbyist, I simply don’t have all the means/knowledge some people expect, so who is the expected userbase?

Tell me how you fake your phone number, they won’t accept paid (or unpaid) burner numbers.

This seems like a very logical and reasonable assessment, but I always wonder, somebody HAS to know this.

As in, the bomber pilots don’t know what their mission is really about, the generals just follow orders, but who decides on this?

Trump is too old/stupid to come up with such plans, so who is pulling the strings? His cabinet? The heads of the oil companies? How deep does this go? Also, it seems to permeate different administrations at this point.

I mean, that’s a pretty horrible case, but that video is a bit dumb.

It doesn’t show anything, really. There’s a fetus linked to a nuclear bomb and a skull arristically placed with some liquid around it people interpret to be oil because of the implication. You literally see such scenes all the time. It’s a bit of a coincidence that it was shown then, but still.

So what, do you think ghosts learned to video edit and animate scenes and fed it to some broadcasting network?

I would like to know what that footage is from, actually.

Tried it a couple of times, wasn’t my thing. Last time, I had some more serious issues with it (file manager doing weird stuff), so I tossed it for good.

Also Mate is heavily tied to the whole Ubuntu/Snap thing, so that’s a bit yuckie to me.

The idea is that you would just need to simulate that level of detail if someone actually looks. You don’t have to simulate any atoms if nobody can see them. Computer games do this all the time to save ressources.

There is no real argument against a simulation just as there is none against god being an alien, just the probability is not in favour of it.

But I also believe life is just kinda what it is.

This is SO true. I let a few people pass at a narrowing in the evening and they sometimes thanked me by blinding me temporarily. Like, I appreciate the gratitude, but just don’t.

Why aren’t they produced anymore? I imagine it would be possible to have something similar manufactured for way less.

Or is it something about poisonous substances inside or something?
