I’m not really sure Azure or AWS is much better. Not a defense of Oracle or Larry, just a dearth of free VPS servers out there, and I’m not sure I want to spin up a paid one with the other guys.

I’d say this is a significant factor. Some youtuber did a video where he basically showed that most Musk stocks were overinflated by a factor of 10 based on their traditional metrics. The difference was basically built on investors’ confidence that Musk could keep the companies growing. Between driving away customers, not focusing on building his businesses, and still not achieving the goals he promised, investors are rightly worried that desired growth is no longer something to bank on. He may have to stop relying on the wunderkind factor and actually start running his companies responsibly, and I don’t think he can do that anymore, if he ever could.

I agree with every statement here except the last. The whole history of AI is pretty much a sequence of:

• “It will be real AI when it can do ‘this’.”
• Programmers figure out a way to make it do ‘this’.
• “Okay, it’s doing ‘this’, but not in a way we would call AI.”
• "Alright, then what would you need for something to be AI?
• Return to the top.

LLMs are pretty amazing and they can do some things very well, and reasonably fit under the category of AI, but not so much what is referred to as AGI. And they’re developed using some really shitty practices, etc. But prior to their invention, the idea that we could have a computer do what they do was a reasonable idea of what AI would be.

I told my kids that when I start saying stupid, right-wing, racist shit to take away my internet privileges and just let me play offline games. Stupid shit is still on the table…

That was the premise used in Blade 2 for some types of vampires. Also, traditionally, believed vampires were often beheaded (not sure if it was to kill them or after killing them) and buried with their head between their legs, presumably to stop them from healing and becoming active again. It was very effective, mostly because vampires aren’t real.

This reminds me of an old clip from Benny Hill. He’s playing a Texan and says, “They flew me over here on a Boe-ing 747. It sounds like a piece of the plane just flew off!” Too bad he didn’t get to live to see his joke turn into an ongoing issue.

You say you’re into privacy communities, but you sound like someone who pays to get more ads. As for reading comprehension, what exactly does pretty harmless mean to you?

My first thought when reading your previous reply is that you’re someone who likes to argue for the sake of arguing. This reply has reinforced that opinion.

I think this is the first step in an arms race between fonts that can’t be read by computers and systems to differentiate between obfuscated text.

So, you walk into a government agency, and they say, “Thanks for providing this required information about yourself. You can provide more information about yourself to us and everyone you pass while driving your vehicle, for a fee. Remember, the more mainstream your opinion, the more it will cost.” Why would anyone say yes to that proposal? And why would you get up in arms about someone saying they think that’s ridiculous but generally pretty harmless?

I’m kind of in agreement with him, in that I don’t see the point in paying extra to have an ID on my car that tells The Man more about me than I think they need to know, but I don’t think it makes me a shill or (much of) a sucker if I get them. Everyone, including me, makes less than ideal choices. This poor choice is less egregious than most.

Yes, but if you don’t nuke everyone else to the stone age, or inches away from it, they could stop you. And why are you worried that a few billion people who don’t matter will die? Everyone who matters, those with the money and power and those that are to be experimented on, are all in vaults, and will have no desire to leave for the nuclear wasteland.

You’re right, that would be really stupid, just like Americans fighting over guns in a zombie apocalypse (ammo and medicine are the real limited supplies, especially if you suck at fighting zombies), or killing off a couple percent of your population because wearing masks is uncomfortable. So it seems very plausible.

For this to be reflective of an even amount of bites per number of each breed of dog owned, half the dogs owned would have to be pit bulls. That doesn’t match my very casual observations. This site, whose accuracy and validity I haven’t bothered to verify in any way, puts pit bulls at about 20% of the dogs sent to shelters. It seems very likely that the dog fatalities are outsized relative to the number of pit bulls owned in America.

Not Banks Orbitals, which are amazing and a fair way into the future, but orbital rings. They’re another launch system like space elevators, but have some advantages and drawbacks.

It’s probably been about a decade since I bought a game on physical media, and that would have been a Nintendo product. I don’t think I’ve purchased a PC game on physical media for a couple decades, and yet I keep hearing about pirated copies of them. I don’t think physical copies disappearing will have a significant impact on the level of piracy in either direction.
