Technology@lemmy.world•Facebook Is Drowning In Islamophobic AI Slop Calling for Violence Against Muslim AmericansEnglish
18·1 day agoThis. Facebook is already involved in a genocide. Zuckerberg does know what happened there. He is allowing the same hatred on his platform again. That is intentional.

Technology@lemmy.world•France’s nuclear fleet gives it one of the world’s lowest-carbon electricity gridsEnglish
91·4 days agoYeah, the famous french anti-nuclear lobby. Those guys who control the french government with its nuclear weapons, who has also recently built a nuclear reactor. That government totally is controlled by the anti-nuclear lobby.
Or … maybe France tried upgrading its aging nuclear reactors with the new reactor in Flamanville, which went spectacular over budget? And debt ridden EdF simply has not the funds to build over 50 new reactors at 13 billion each?
I like the article. Interesting subject, well written and it has the perfect lenght.

Technology@lemmy.world•Firefox is now the last major browser that still supports uBlock OriginEnglish
483·5 days agoThat will totally lead to websites not supporting or even blocking Firefox. Together with uBlock capitulating against Facebook and all those age registration nonsense, I really am scared about the future of the web.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How can i teach myself to contribute to these projects?English
51·5 days agoA few hints:
- Start with smaller projects with simpler codebases. Do not try to understand what LibreOffice or Jellyfin are doing.
- Maybe try to understand how one specific part of that software works. Chatbots are really, really good at explaining existing code, so ask your bot where the feature is located and let it explain it to you

Technology@lemmy.world•Reddit forces login to access old.reddit.comEnglish
1·7 days agoYeah, kind of. I refuse to login and notice how often I still klick on Reddit. That is like a cold shower, but cures the muscle memory.
First of all, many of us used Google Reader and Google shutting that down totally destroyed my trust in Google and other companies. My reader is critical infrastructure for me and I do not want some random company to screw me again. I think that many others experienced losing a valuable tool and that is why there are so many selfhosted RSS readers out there.

3·12 days agoIf we are taking the 2004 NATO expansion as a cutoff and the fall of the Soviet union in 1991 as baseline, Russia attacked Georgia and Moldova in the 1990s. Followed by Georgia again in 2008 & Ukraine in 2014 and 2022.

32·14 days agoIt’s the right of every country to join military alliances as they want. And some promise back in the early 90s is totally nothing binding that is valid when one country is actively attacking its neighbors. Every neighbor state will then try to get into an alliance against such aggression.

1·15 days agoNow imagine a family that doesn’t have a tech guy like you. You think they would ever be able to install any OS, let alone Linux?
That’s the thing: Many families have a tech guy. The son who knows computers. The neighbor. The dude from work. And yes, if you are able to read, you can install a Linux. It’s not that complicated and there are a lot of really good instructions online.

Technology@lemmy.world•Linux didn't just eat 10% of Windows market share, AI bots are inflating the numbersEnglish
10·15 days agoThe numbers kind of add up:
- Statcounter gives you 10%
- Cloudflare gives you 5.7% “Likely human” and 8.9% total
- Steam Hardware Survey shows 4% Linux
So even if it is not 10%, it looks like a solid 5% might be possible.

Technology@lemmy.world•U.S. FCC approves giant space mirror to deliver 'sunlight on demand,' but what are the legal implications?English
111·17 days agoIt’s totally fucked up that one country can approve of a thing that is affecting all other countries. That is stupid and fuck the USA for polluting the sky for all of humanity.

Technology@lemmy.world•U.S. FCC approves giant space mirror to deliver 'sunlight on demand,' but what are the legal implications?English
7·17 days agoThis totally is military tech. The states use case does not make any sense. But if you think about the military uses: You could light up the night in Gaza or Fallujah, making for easier observation of insurgents. Make the sky blink over russian refineries, confusing air defense. Spot sea drones in front of your ports. Eternal sunshine around US military bases and on the Ukrainian front.

It’s not just about backups. If you discontinue the collection of certain data or mess with the data itself before publication, the whole study might get useless. Take those long-term studies researching health outcomes over decades. If you mess with the data collection there, you can’t get clean data back after Trump is dead.
