I think I received a ton of these from Photobucket, where I didn’t even know I had an account, for a whole year before it finally stopped. September 2023-August 2024, I just checked. The thing was, they were asking me if my account could be deleted but required me to log in to the account and I didn’t care enough to bother with a password reset and all that.

So for a 6 month period they sent a new mail every 3 days. I honestly thought they were never going to delete the account, but apparently they did eventually.

While I understand this sentiment and do agree that we should have a high sense of climate urgency, oil companies aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. A big first step is simply to stop burning oil, but even if we do that we will still require a huge amount of it. All plastics, ALL of them, are oil derivatives.

Look around you, wherever you are, and you will see things that are made with plastics. And if they aren’t made out of oil derivatives, they are made by oil derivatives either as a source of energy, or the machinery to make it has plastics. The clothes you are wearing, your shoes, your hair comb, your toaster, car, glasses, pc, t-shirt, birding binoculars, camping tent, the list is never ending because it’s everyfuckingwhere. The prints on your glass, the pen with which you write or the keyboard you type on, it is so incredibly pervasive.

So we can rant at these oil companies, but an enormous chunk of the economy depends on it and that’s a simple fact. I’m not claiming to have the answers, but we can’t just get rid of oil, which is why I say that step 1 is to simply stop burning it. That will already stop the worst, the bleeding if you will.

And sure, renewables are good and to have renewable energy is infinitely better than burning oil, but they only solve the most obvious problem. The real issue is what would we use instead of plastics? And as far as I know, there is no alternative.

The EU is where innovation goes to die.

This is such bullshit. There are three principle reasons why the EU does not grow as many tech giants: 1. Venture capital is hard to cone by in the EU, 2. The language barriers and 3. The not-quite-finished-single market, with many countries not aligning their laws to the EU framework. 1 and 3 are actively being addressed and 2 is a disappearing issue as the younger generations aee all fluent in English.

To your point however, innovation has always been one of the strong suits of the European continent, much more so than monetization which is not a synonym.

Windows 11 has given me so many headaches at work I have genuinely explored moving the entire corporate environment to Linux. Unfortunately it would be a massive multi-year operation that would not bring the amount of benefits required to get such a thing greenlighted. But simply the fact that I, and many peers, took a good hard look at it tells you just how incredibly shit Windows 11 is. It’s a fucking nightmare on so many levels, it’s ridiculous.

Throughout history the human population has only been able to increase thanks to innovation. Irrigation, the wheel, alternating crops, crop distance, keeping disease in check, genetic engineering to increase resistance and crop yields, and this is another innovation in that line. If you want to go back to nature, by all means do.

I believe the only way forward is through science and innovation and if that means genetically altered food for the bees, then so be it. This with the in combination with limiting roundup should bring the global bee populations back from the brink.

It’ll be quantum computing. Since the last hype around it, a lot of progress has been made to the point that quantum computers are actually becoming useful, since error correction is now mostly resolved.

I initially thought he was great. Their cloud business was booming, it looked like they were converging their tools, windows 10 had its flaws but was pretty good. But now the tools are an enormous mess because they have changed their minds 5 times over, Windows 11 is complete dogshit and all the tools that are actually handy are paywalled behind expensive licences. Copilot is being forcefed to unwilling users and every single one of their tools is becoming worse.
