Technology@lemmy.world•Climate goals go up in smoke as US datacenters turn to coalEnglish
1·10 months agoLol. I thought the “crash can’t come soon enough” line was hilariously close to Dwight’s line. It was a joke. I guess everybody missed it. Fair enough, too, it was a joke from a comedy program… Why would anyone think that was supposed to be funny.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why don't they have simpler names for brain disorders, where perhaps even the person suffering the disorder might be able to remember the term themself?English
5·1 year agoPart of the problem with dementia is that short term memory loss and aphasia are two of the most common early symptoms. It’s not because it’s a difficult word, it is because their brain no longer has the capacity to function that way. It wouldn’t matter what you called it, they still may not be able to learn it or remember it: the part of the brain that used to do that for them may no longer be accessible.
Most people don’t realise that dementia is terminal. It is a gradual cognitive and physical decline that results in death.
The Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre at University of Tasmania has an open course on Understanding Dementia that is really good, and free, if anyone is interested in learning more.

Minecraft@lemmy.world•Running own server - basic questionsEnglish
4·1 year agoWhile there are some client-side mods, they have limited functionality and are mostly cosmetic. For “modded” Minecraft you need to run the mods server-side. The easiest way to do this is to download the server packs from Curseforge and run one of those. Once running, they’re pretty-much maintenance free. You can update when the server packs update, but unless they’re critical updates, it’s up to you if you do it or not (when you do, you need to ensure the clients are updated to the same version; which they can do easily with Curseforge) Set up scripts for backups and server reboots every so often and you’re good.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Have you ever been under general anesthesia? What was it like? Did anything strange happen?English
6·3 years agoI went under for an appendectomy in 2004. I can remember the feeling of the anaesthetic moving up my arm (they put it in through a wrist cannula). It was weird. It felt like nothing. My hand just disappeared from my senses. I felt it moving up my arm and into my shoulder and into my neck and

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is the most unhelpful advice you have received?English
181·3 years agoUnsolicited medical advice drives me nuts.
Gee. Thanks “doctor” for your advice. Obviously I’m going to listen to you after you watched a three minute YouTube video and not the doctor with six years of medical training and education!
The Accountant and Jack Ryan. Ben Affleck and John Krascinski as their respective characters operating in the same universe would be cool. I think they would be an awesome pairing.
