That’s fair. And I wouldn’t say it fucked it up for me, I still enjoyed the remaster quite a lot (though I actually did wind up doing a much longer modded play through of the original right after… cuz many more better mods). But it really did highlight how different the atmosphere and tone were.

To be fair, during exploration, I found the remaster’s atmosphere to be an improvement. It felt a lot more immersive.

I have mixed feeling on this.

The remaster really does look great, and it’s clear they put a lot of passion and love into it.

But “atmosphere” is a tricky concept, and I didn’t feel like the remaster really captured the original’s. Instead it replaced it with its own more “epic” atmosphere. The difference is most jarring to me with NPCs. The corny, cheesy vibes they give off take me right out of the new “epic” tone. But in the original, it all just fits.

Think I would cap out at David Sedaris levels of fame. Anything more would be too much bother.

You can’t explain that.

There are no ethical large computer manufacturers. Framework, like its competitors, financially supports unethical people, and projects, and there’s no such thing as an end-to-end ethical supply chain right now.

People want Framework to be ethical because they champion repairability, and on a relative scale, you could do a lot worse. But that’s also the problem. Most people buying a new MacBook or ThinkPad never think about ethics. Framework puts ethics front and center, then drops the ball the moment you dig deeper than repairability.

If you want to buy “ethically,” your best option is used. The device was still made unethically, by a company that funded abhorrent causes, and the seller will likely reinvest your money into the very ecosystem you’re trying to avoid. But at least you kept something out of a landfill a little longer, and put one more degree of Kevin Bacon between yourself and the worst of it.

To keep things in perspective, Framework is probably less unethical than most manufacturers, and they’re doing more for repairability than most. And even Doug Forcett wasn’t good enough for the Good Place, so you know… you have to draw your own lines.

Awesome, do it. Have fun. No reason to overthink it. I think that’s really cool.

That’s the trick to Morrowind. It does have fast travel, it’s just integrated into the world building much better. Between Silt Striders, Boats, Mage Guild Teleportation, Mark and Recall, Intervention spells, and things like Levitation and the Boots of Blinding Speed, you can actually often get around the map faster than in later games (just watch a Morrowind speed run). But to do so you needed to build up both your character, and your own knowledge of the game world.

Fast Travel wasn’t some feature that broke immersion to add convenience, it instead added to both. It enhanced the feeling of exploration, and character progression, while teaching the player about the world.

Very normal. Pretty much everyone I know collects these little holes in their heart from important connections that for one reason or another are no longer around. Just the way of things. Hurts when the wind blows through though.

But while it’s very normal, it’s good to remind yourself that all things are temporary, and that being able to form connections is a gift to be cherished. I’m glad you had someone to be there for you, and I hope things are going well for both of you.
