Same here. I’m glad it allows for growth and forks rather than a collapse when schisms occur. It’s why I keep saying I don’t like piefed, but I’m happy it’s there.

It depends on your values and what kind of experience you want. For me, I couldn’t find a piefed instance that met all my criteria.

I wanted no instances blocked, no flagged users for low karma (I didn’t want karma to matter at all,) able to see greentext communities (4chan screenshots are blocked on some, if not all piefed instances,) and be able to see the modlog.

Piefed has additional features that lemmy lacks, like following individual users and multi-coms, but it wasn’t enough to get me to switch.

I like the openness of the lemmyverse, since there’s more room for individuality between the instances without a developer ideologically holding the reins, though I’ve heard Rimu has walked back their more controversial decisions. For all the criticisms of ML and Grad, the developers affiliations don’t pollute the wider fediverse.

Whichever you choose, make sure you look into the instances as well, since they have unique features, blocklists, and supports for apps.

On second inspection, all of my news communities are blocked. This list is ideologically all over the place, makes me think these blocks are based on personal vendettas as much as politics.

I used tesh very rarely, only to ban users across all my communities and only in extreme cases, until recently when it just stopped working for me. Now I know why.

The communities aren’t far left or right, one is just general news that’s about 50% science articles and the other is for independent Canadian news. This kind of censorship is as infuriating as it is bizarre.

In LeakedBB’s early days, it had sections for other types of “leaked” content such as computer programmes and eBooks. But within months, the forum’s discussions were almost exclusively about pornographic images and videos that members claimed had been leaked – implying that it was non-consensual, hacked or stolen content.

Not only that, but they actively encouraged non-con nudes and leaked footage.

I see a number of different opinions and cultures, which is why I chose my instance. .Today doesn’t block, so I can pick what I want to see and browse by subscribed.

Scrolling the All feed on .world tends to be more of an echo chamber than selecting about a hundred individual communities to check regularly.

I try to run discussions and challenges in some of my communities, the problems are just me getting busy and general forgetfulness.

The womens stuff community does a great job of keeping people engaged with daily topics and weekly chat threads, which other communities could take notes from.

Beyond that, better mod tools, public calendars to schedule events and puzzles would be great for larger communities.

Personally, I think Lemmy needs more ‘best of’ posts, or maybe just awareness of the best-of communities, to encourage engagement and showcase the community.

Some of the other tips are covered (aluminum in deodorant is a big cause of stains) so I’d recommend clothing made of natural fibres like cotton, bamboo and wool. They have natural antibacterial properties and are easier to strip stains out of with basic detergents and vinegar.
