Unfortunately, this is very true.
For what it’s worth, I still try to maintain as much control as possible by using OSes like Graphene or Linux. I also have just started refusing to pay for things I can’t own. That includes gaming consoles, cloud services, smart home devices, Samsung/Apple phones, leased cars, etc. If Google keeps killing and locking down AOSP, it may soon include all Android phones too.
I’m hoping we can get some regulations pushed through before that point.
Oh trust me, I’m no fan of Samsung, but I tend to value control of my devices over…whatever it is Apple does. I had an iPhone until I discovered replacing the home button myself artificially bricked the device due to DRM forcing customers to go to an Apple store for repairs. Never again

As far as I know, nearly all flagship phones, Apple or otherwise, get about 7 years of update support (except Pixel phones with GrapheneOS which get 14 ignore; I remembered this incorrectly).
The difference is, even my old phone running Android 8 (a 9yo OS) can still browse the web, run all apps, and perform fine as a phone. An even older phone running Android 4.4 can still run 3rd party apps. iPhones seem to stop working about a year after they stop receiving updates, and they don’t support sideloading (also know as running the software you want to run on the device you own).

It took me trying the Microsoft 365 app exactly once to permanently switch to LibreOffice Viewer. Sure it can’t do editing but I don’t really care about that, and viewing Office files works flawlessly. As far as I know it’s not on Apple devices, but if you’ve got an Android device you should check it out.
Do note that Mbin can see crossposts too if the client app (e.g. Interstellar) implements it

I will say, just like Reddit, we have our share of insane mods, but nobody can get banned platform-wide b/c they can just join a federated instance if their instance owner kicks them out (this is both a positive and a negative; community mods are under a lot more pressure to prevent illegal stuff on a per-comm basis than on Reddit).
Modlogs are public, so you’ll never really not know why something got removed and by whom, even if you disagree with their decision.
I left Reddit when they killed 3rd-party apps, so I never got to experience the wonderful censorship of today’s Reddit experience. Having been here now a couple years, this place feels a lot more human to me, despite (or maybe due to?) it being a lot smaller. I like it here better tbh and I hope you will too. The more the merrier!
I recommend checking out [email protected] if you’re looking for active communities, since they can be a bit harder to find than on Reddit. Also, don’t forget to block the .ml instances, they’re filled with tankies (unless you want that on your feed ig lol).
Depends on the platform - some federated instances (e.g. mine, Mbin) keep a tally of a user’s total upvotes minus downvotes as an overall “reputation” score
This is the way. I also find throwing in a bit of ancho chile pepper tastes amazing if you like some extra spice and smokiness. Sliced mushrooms are also great in chili if you like them

The public beta looks pretty good but it’s currently very slow. There is a large refactor going on so I’m hoping for the best, but even in its current state it seems to support many of Discord’s biggest features quite well.
I’m on Mbin and there is no auto upvote, so every comment/post starts at zero. I could be wrong but I think it actually removes the self-upvote from posts/comments if they have it.

Having lived through 3 partial/total solar eclipses, even a small shift in the amount of light really fucks with the rhythm of the entire environment. Birds stopped chirping entirely at noon last time. We’d just be replacing one form of global disaster with another.
Not to mention we’d end up fully saturating the available orbital space around earth, causing constant satellite crashes and the complete inability to launch rockets through the mesh and debris. At a certain point the satellites would cease to function entirely through all the trash orbiting earth and at that point we’d have essentially walled ourselves off from ever safely exploring space. It’s a terrible idea all around
