I’d put another zero or 2 on there for what’s earnable with hard work and smart decisions. A million these days is like upper middle class. It’s a nice, but fairly normal, house in most parts of the country and a good start on a retirement fund. Point is still valid though.

Honestly, I view $100 million as about the most a person should realistically have to still be remotely a normal person. After that, it’s really just excess and power. That’s enough where you’ve definitely won life - you can have lots of toys, a mansion, never need to work again, a very nice income in perpetuity, etc.


I don’t usually use plugins on the Android version. I don’t use the Android much, actually, just due to my use patterns. There’s actually several different KeePass Android apps. KeePass is open source and the database format is documented. So anybody can make a program that uses the same database. The one I use is Keepass2Android, seems to be one of the popular ones. Looks like it also can natively generate TOTP. Apparently it has some sort of plugin system, but I’ve never needed to use it because it can pull my password database out of my Google Drive natively.
You need to specify what kind of passkey to be more specific. There’s several different algorithms. HOTP and TOTP are very widely used. It’s what Google Authenticator and the like use. If you have something very proprietary, like the old RSA keys, that probably can’t be emulated by any software. Or they could, but you can’t get the secret to be able to do that.

Are you trying to use a passkey to unlock the database or for authenticating with other websites? KeePass can natively do TOTP. There’s also plugins to do that. Including one that allows KeePass to be a native Windows 11 PassKey Provider.


I use KeePass + KeeAnywhere. KeeAnywhere will sync with a wide variety of cloud storage providers. Or your own S3 data bucket server (can be self hosted or on Amazon), if you prefer. Does pretty much the same thing though with versioning. Auto filling in Firefox is done with KeePassHttp-connector on the Firefox side and the KeePassHTTP plugin in KeePass. Similar to what you describe.

No, KeePass. Fully open source, no cloud involved in any way, unless you want something to sync your data (the server only ever sees your encrypted database - all encryption and decryption is done locally). You can also host your own sync server using any of a variety of different protocols.


Alot of these sellers on Alibaba aren’t nearly up to what an ODM is. They’re sorta more like middlemen that do stuff like take generic phones from ODMs and customize them or just grab parts off the local market and slap them together. To work with somebody like Foxconn, you’d better have some significant volumes - they just won’t talk to you otherwise. Now, maybe Trump is an exception there, but they’re still not going to want to do business unless there’s decent volume in it for them. The volumes I’ve seen for this phone is the sort of thing that wouldn’t even register for them. They’d only even think about it as a way to buy favor.


Well, some people are doing it just because it’s good content. Penguinz0 on YouTube has made a bunch of videos off his Trump phone experience. I’m sure he’s made out like a bandit with the revenue from those videos.


I mean they could have jumped on Alibaba, had a customized firmware, had the “gold” color, had a logo or something screen printed on the outside, and probably spent less than $100/phone, at least if current listings are correct. Sell the things for like $299 and they clear $200 profit on each with nearly no effort.

There’s not really a reason to be upset with a phone running a privacy focused version of Android. Android, at heart, is Linux with some runtime stuff on top. The runtime stuff has open source versions that Google is involved with, but its still open source. There’s also independent reimplementations of some of the proprietary Google stuff.
The thing is, there’s really only 2 mobile platforms with any sort of application support: iOS and Android. iOS will probably never have open source versions. If you go outside those 2 platforms, you end up being very limited. You can talk to Amazon, Mozilla, Canonical, Microsoft, Palm, BlackBerry, and others about what that world looks like. So, if you want to have any application support and therefore any traction, the best bet is to take something that’s already mostly open source, reimplement the non open source bits, and make sure what’s left doesn’t depend on Google (though most have a way to use Google services, often is a restricted way, if you need that). That’s what /e/OS and GrapheneOS do.


Though there are a few creators that do such good ad segments that even those are worth watching. Map Men, Aging Wheels, and lazerpig all come to mind.


It’s only a matter of time before the open source stuff gets those features too, if people want them. There’s plenty of decent open source generative AI out there. I’m sure people can find creative ways to incorporate them.


To make you even more jealous, the 100Mbps I pay for tests as that, both up and down. For $48/month, no billing shenanigans. I had 1Gbps for a bit and it was testing near gigabit ethernet’s theoretical maximum, both up and down. Fiber to the rack is kind of awesome. Oh and when I call for tech support, I get somebody local. I’ve actually gotten one of the owners before. And they do a yearly Halloween party/customer appreciation day. Talking with one of the owners, it’s like he practically expects that people are going to be downloading those 4k Linux isos.
You’d probably like what I had before - awful DSL. I was near the maximum limit for DSL. The technician said the line could do 15Mbps. I usually ended up around 12. And I was the lucky one. Some of my neighbors were like 1.5. So glad to dump Centurylink.


I’m out in the country in Colorado. I have a small local ISP. I can get 10Gb if I want it. I have 100Mb because that’s all I need. Honestly, for most people, I really don’t know what you’d do with 25Gb. Even 10Gb is tough for alot of home users. The equipment is out there and not even that expensive, but its also not something most people own. Most people who own that sort of stuff are either home labbers or tech enthusiasts. And even if most people did, they would rarely use it to its full potential. For most people 2.5Gb is far more practical. Oddly enough it can be harder and more expensive to get your hands on than 10Gb because it’s just starting to really penetrate the consumer market, where 10Gb was common in datacenters for a long time, so used equipment is quite reasonable.
The biggest issue with ISPs in the US is that you have legacy players entrenched in a market and unwilling to spend the money to do upgrades. The main reason I have what I have is because a local company saw an opportunity to go into a space others were failing badly at and used a state grant to help fund the buildout. Soon, I may have a second option because my electric co-op is working on their own build. Since they answer to their members and not the stock market, now that fiber is cheap, they can build this stuff widely. We need more of all that.
Not to defend the AI crowd, but ever go to a Goodwill Outlet store? They usually have at least 1 gaylord box (the giant box on a pallet watermelons come in) full of books. Not sure how often they cycle those out, but I’m guessing pretty regularly. Multiply that by every semi major city Goodwill has a presence in. Add in other thrift sores with a similar quantity of books. You’re talking ALOT of books. SO MANY books are thrown out everyday. Including by libraries. I don’t really have a problem if some of those get diverted for a bit to be scanned. Yes, it’s sad to see books getting destroyed. But there’s alot of stuff people just really don’t want. And, if you REALLY want a villain, maybe you can blame copyright law? That’s part of the reason AI companies destroy the books - it helps to make their scanning efforts more legal. Absent that, they could probably be convinced to spend just a little more for nondestructive scanning, assuming they could find a home for the books they scanned (the sellers of these things couldn’t, so good luck).
