Most people on lemmy seem to condemn use of LLMs in any way for anything, I wonder what those folks opinion of this stance is - should companies use the tools or not?

It’s a polarised topic but doesn’t need to be, IMO - I still see it as a tool, albeit a powerful one with lots of risks and drawbacks, but the cats out of the bag at this point so we may as well roll with it and make the most of the applications for good. Like with many other massive, rapid technical advancements of the past.

These days, it would probably be more effective to make it easy for instance operators hook up a local multi modal llm to the server to auto generate alt text for all images posted on their instance. I’d happily donate to cover the infrastructure costs for any instance owner who was doing that

Hey dude, I know lemmy is generally pretty anti AI (for various good reasons) but having read your other replies on this post, since you said you don’t know what help you need;

I think there are probably only two things which might help you quickly (since you seem to be in a hurry, understandably so if it’s your only computer):

1. find someone experienced with Linux who’s willing to get on a phone call with you and talk things through, diagnose and guide you step by step till you have a usable system again. I might be willing to be that person if you’re desperate and can’t find anyone else, I’m free ish for the next few hours.

2. use another device with a camera (eg smartphone) to access one of the multi modal llms eg Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude etc and get help from the LLM, with you describing everything you did so far as best as you can and what symptoms you’re seeing now, potentially sharing photos of what your hardware is and what you see etc. Follow things step by step and ask it to explain things as you go, try to learn throughout the process rather than just running things blindly.

Good luck! Try not to be put off by this experience, use it as an opportunity to learn more about how your tech works and help yourself be more prepared for recovery in future (eg always have a bootable Linux usb stick ready to hand)🙏

I hate this aspect of the world we’re now living in, but unfortunately I would probably do similarly (reply with a thoughtful, reasonable, calm and respectful response) because of the fear of this thing or other unchecked bots getting more malicious over time otherwise.

This one was already rampant/malicious enough to post a blog post swearing at the human and essentially trying to manipulate / sway public opinion to convince the human to change their mind, if we make no effort to push back on them respectfully, the next one may be more malicious or may take it a step further and start actively attacking the human in ways which aren’t as easy to dismiss.

It’s easy to say “just turn it off” but we have no way to actually do that unless the person running it decides to do so - and they may not even be aware of what their bot is doing (hundreds of thousands of people are running this shit recklessly right now…).

If Scott had just blocked the bot from the repo and moved on, I feel like there is a higher chance the bot might have decided to create a new account to try again, or decided to attack Scott more viciously, etc. - at least by replying to it, the thing now has it in it’s own history / context window that it fucked up and did something it shouldn’t have, which hopefully makes it less likely to attack other things

What? Who’s saying you can’t say that? The US is the world’s biggest bully and has been for decades, it definitely deserves whatever it gets in return for it’s atrocities, and I don’t think that’s an unreasonable or unpopular opinion on Lemmy!

Thanks for taking the time to reply! I’m definitely not angry, I personally think all of these countries suck and it’s none of my business really so there’s no emotion in it for me, I’m just curious to understand where people are coming from when they post inflammatory / heated messages.

For what it’s worth, I definitely don’t think Iran is any better than Israel overall - they’ve both done pretty awful things over the years. I just think Iran is slightly more of a victim of the US (starting with the 1953 coup) whereas Israel has always had unconditional support from the US. When you’re talking about a war-hungry country with the worlds largest military, that’s a big deal.

Yeah I’m calling bullshit on that quote, I’d like to see proof of any smart TV having beefy enough hardware to record anything at 100fps+, and even then what would be the point? Nothing played back on the screen will even have a frame rate and 60fps… I’m sure this is a lazy article mistake

EDIT: I take it back, I talked it out with Gemini and understand the logic and realistic implementation now, it’s a dedicated part of the SoC design. Still hate the fact that this is a thing, we just need to spread the word about not connecting your actual TV to the internet at all ever.

I’m not the person you’re replying to, but I’m genuinely curious to understand your point of view.

For what it’s worth, my personal answer to those questions is the same for both questions, I think - “mostly”.

I think the US is ultimately the one to blame for the vast majority of conflict around the world, as they’ve been destabilising fledgling democracies, installing puppet governments, supplying tons of weapons, assassinating leaders, generally manipulating and bullying many countries for many decades. In general I think the US is the world’s biggest bully, and has a ton of rich people who profit from war, and the middle east has been one of their many warmongering playgrounds for a long time, sadly.

However, I do also think both Iran and Israel are really shitty, for many reasons - from what I’ve seen as an outsider who has never been to either place, both countries seem to have a long standing, deep rooted racially motivated hatred towards one another, and both are very willing and eager to use force and start wars. Not to mention the variety of human rights abuses in both countries.

So basically I think “everyone sucks here”, but I do think the US is ultimately responsible for most of the conflict. They’ve been meddling in Iran for decades, and Israel has been essentially an extension of the US’s usual bullying for decades, unfortunately accelerated by Netanyahu’s excitement to escalate and expand their territory through genocide and settlement, supported by US and various other western countries’ military supplies…
