I’d have to guess they have a better distribution of good guy with gun vs bad guy with gun?
Or just fewer bad guys? or less-bad guys?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do cooks and chefs cook in base 5 increments? For example setting the oven at 350 , 375, 450 and so on. Is there a reason for this or is this how it always has been done?
2·20 days agoI know yanks hate decimal and stuff because of how hard the mental arithmetic is, but it’s half of the more significant digit. I guess and they wanted more precision than 10s, but don’t see the need for 1s, so they split it in half or the equipment is not capable of more precision.
TBH - I don’t know what a dungaree fezundheit is anyway, but I’d imagine 5F is way spurious accuracy already for a domestic oven. I reckon you’d need an industrial or scientific kiln for that type of accuracy - so it’s probably more a psychology / user interface thing. In which case the answer is, ‘because enough customers are happy enough with it as it is.’

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there a way to make a system recovery USB just in case shit happens? Will it still work without a recovery pointt? How does it read the usb if all comps are set up to read the c: drive?
4·22 days agoThere’s a boot key press combination to interrupt normal start up and select an alternative boot medium. Usually things like f12, f1, del, or esc, mashed at the right time after power-on.
For locked down devices like modern smartphones and probably games consoles etc, it’s a lot more involved, and it may be next to impossible to boot a different OS, but there’s often a combo to get at least into a factory reset boot menu.
Edit: lookinto ‘system-rescue-cd’ or ‘knoppix’ which are pretty useful USBs to have around lots of tools to try to mount and recover disks and move data . ‘clonezilla’ can also be useful to create a disk image before you try any risky steps.
Beware Modern windows likes to encrypt which might impede those tools. I’ve seen cases where the user doesn’t know (claims to never have been told!) the decryption key. In those cases recovery may be hard/complex in some scenarios.
But a proper backup system (3-2-1 , fairly often) for important data is a far better way to prepare for “shit”. And “the cloud is not a complete backup system” is not a bad a general rule.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it possible to install aur inside distrobox without downloading the entire distro ??
1·26 days agoYou don’t download or install aur itself. It’s a repository of packages.
Helper programs like paru make it easier for you to connect to, search, download, build and update packages from the repo.
You can also use other methods, for example ‘git’ to clone the source for the package and build it yourself, but the helper programs should also help fetch dependencies.
As with everything in arch, the wiki is recommended reading: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AUR_helpers https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_User_Repository

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why Aren't there More Fem-Focused Werewolf Stories?
2·27 days agoAngua without the i. I was going to mention her if no one else did.
Maybe supports your point though as IIRC she was sort of forced into the watch by an affirmative action campaign from the city. I think there were some sexist attitudes from the male coppers.
Slightly tangential but there was a teenage fantasy series by David Eddings featuring some sorcerers who were basically clarting about as wolves half the time, one of the main characters, Polgara was i think effectively a werewolf, but it was by choice rather than forced by the moon.
Heh, this is interesting, i had no idea male werewolves went back as far as Gilgamesh. https://strangehorizons.com/wordpress/non-fiction/although-male-werewolves-have-appeared-in-fiction-since-the-very-beginning-female-werewolves-are-relatively-new-literary-monsters-so-where-do-these-female-werewolves-come-from-and-what-baggage-do-t/
Buy a phone that lineage os support then. Way more options than pixels. Pretty cheap used, you just have to accept one from a few years ago. and make sure that any required bootloader unlock from oem can still be done.
Straw is cheaper than rasp by weight.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Was there ever a solid or scientific answers to which came first chicken or the egg?
3·29 days agoI think it you take any example of a chicken that is alive today and were able to trace back its ancestry far enough then you’d eventually find an ancestor that most reasonable people would agree is not a chicken. And probably many of those “non-chicken” ancestors did hatch out of “non-chicken” eggs. So I think that it is most likely that some “non-chicken” egg existed before, and forms part of the direct ancestry of, every chicken that has ever lived. If that’s what you’re asking.
Many of the arguments to support ‘chicken’ being first seem to add the assumption that “egg” must mean “chicken-egg”. That assumption doesn’t seem reasonable to me, especially in the context of ancestry. Maybe it would be reasonable to creationists though - so frankly if someone does believe that I’d just walk away and let them “win”. I’d rather find a natural history museum and see if they have any proto-chicken exhibits than waste time with people like that.
My answer is also based on extra assumptions too. I’ve slotted the indefinite article in to the gap “[a] chicken”, and worse replaced the definite article “the” with the indefinite “an” in reference to ‘the’ egg. People will argue about that, but the question is ambiguous, and needs to be more specific. ‘Which came first the troll or the bait?’
