I probably fall more into the “weirdo” camp, although whether or not it’s interesting is up for debate. I have never been happy with the Intel Management Engine running closed source code so since the early 2010s or so I’ve either had x86 machines that ran libreboot or had the IME disabled. I have an ARM laptop now that works pretty well. Closed x86 firmware is not going away so I’m more hoping it becomes easier to run open source firmware on ARM, and I have been hoping for a pro-consumer company like framework or system76 to pick that mantle up

Just some small consumer grade APC that I got like ten years ago. It’s basically good enough to withstand quick blips but I have it set to send a shutdown command to the server when the batteries fall below 90% because they last about as long as it takes to cleanly power down the machine.

I feel like you are describing the Nissan Leaf. Bought one used in like 2017 for $12k and it could only do like 80 miles on a charge but that’s more than enough to get to work and back. Cost about $1 of electricity per 100 miles (apologies for freedom units)

If that was true, why do we even have so many distributions?

Don’t ignore the fact that part of the reason there are so many distributions, desktops, window managers, etc etc is because a large number of skilled coders have outsized egos

Salespeople at car dealerships (used or new), and dealership owners moreso. In North America they benefit from protectionist laws to keep people from buying cars directly from manufacturers, which adds approximately $2k to the sale of each car on average. Pointless middlemen who are almost universally the worst people you can imagine. And the dealer service shops are not much better than scams either.

Hyundai/Kia have a major problem with the integrated charge control units that they’re basically refusing to provide a long-term solution for. If it fails in one car, they just replace it with an identical module and hope it doesn’t happen again. But the root cause has not been addressed.
