Cops either use a pretense tools like a drug dog to establish probable cause for the search they want or do parallel construction after they’ve already built the general structure of a case, usually tracing things to a valid cause for search, usually via coached informant.

If you want a less dismissive but very tired slightly high answer: we like to think we’re conscious higher beings who function on logic and imagination and individual will and all these other strong forces that emerge from within us.
And we can be. All those things are possible. They happen. But generally we’re not, and whether by structural pressures confected by centuries of authoritarianism or some evolutional quirk or the fact the warming climate has been starving all our brains of oxygen for over a century; we tend to avoid thinking when possible.
So there’s identity pressures and social pressures best compared to running parts of your computer’s operating system off the cloud and millennia of innovation in abstraction and groupthink to keep anyone from ever having to think or form opinions for themselves.

There’s a bigger problem. The trump admin’s unique combination of evil and stupid as both revealed the united States as what it’s always been, and dismantled every bit of soft and proxy-hard power it’s built around the world, excepting transnational fascist networks.
If the us wants to have any diplomatic links after this administration, we’re gonna gave to kill–fully end the lives of–most of the right wing and current military population. Diplomacy with most of the world except on the most punitive guns-under-the-table terms (and remember, we dismantled most military alliances and showed personal military impotence basically nonstop for this entire century) just won’t be possible if we don’t do this, and do it very loudly. Internal cohesion won’t work unless we kill most of the current leadership and feds. America is going to be totally isolated after 2-6 more years of this.
