I’ve had an eventful week, I setup a laptop as a Proxmox Backup Server, moved my VMs storage to my NAS so I could reconfigure the Proxmox server’s local LVM, and now I have qocw2 storage instead of raw disk files! It was super stressful, but seeing my incremental backups take less than 5 minutes was sooo worth it.

I hope no one would crucify you for it, you’re just trying to help :). I have a plan for offsite backups, but it’s nice to know about alternatives.

Also, you might want to put the backups in a dedicated partition or drive if you can, so you’d just have to reinstall pbs in case it get bad.

Yea that’s the main plan, the laptop would hold the PBS system, but all backups would go straight to the NAS. if the laptop dies I can just find something else to put PBS on with minimal hassle.

Yea that’s what I’ve seen so far, just a backup of the /etc/pve files and other network configs should be good enough I suppose.

Even worse on Linux, their stupid EA app breaks all the time. It took me 20 minutes fucking around to finally get it to work yesterday.

This is why I will never let my TVs connect to my network, there’s a reason they’re so cheap nowdays.

This is my exact setup! I love symfonium because it lets me download specific playlists that I want to have at all times (in case of bad cell service), and feishin for my laptop/desktop where offline downloads aren’t a concern.

I am still keeping an eye on Tempus though, if it gets good enough I might swap over since it’d be one less google play store app.

I just use a WireGuard VPN. Makes it so much more simpler. At this point I don’t think I’ll ever expose anything to the public internet, seems like too much of a headache.

I went with a SciFi ship theme, my main server is VMS-HORIZON (Virtual Machine Ship). The VMs have ship component names like AUDIO-CORE (navidrome) and VISUAL-CORE (Immich).

My Raspberry Pi is named ORBITER, like a orbiting shuttle/satellite, and the VM it has is called BEACON (for Gotify)

The comments give some great advice on what to self host, but my advice to you before you start spinning up a million services is to DOCUMENT EVERYTHING.

Seriously, document as you go and you will thank yourself later. Document niche commands you found online that worked, docker compose files, IP addresses/hostnames, where you put that random config file.

There are some great self hosted wiki and documentation products out there, start with that, then build the fun stuff!

I couldn’t tell reading the post, but they may be renting instead of owning? They likely can’t do bigger construction tasks like that, so they’re forced to use what they have.
