You must be new around these parts. Facebook (and the rest of big tech) are monopolists. For the past ~26 years, the tech industry has been using illegal anticompetitive tactics to suppress competition and destroy potential competitors. The government has done nothing, because they’re stupid and think “big = good”.

An example is Instagram. It was a start up that was growing rapidly, and actually became a threat to Facebook. What did Facebook do? They placed a massive bid to buy the company at like 10x their actual market value. It’s an offer so huge that every investor in Instagram would support the deal even if the founders were against it.

A sane government would see that as an obvious anticompetitive decision, and block the merger. Facebook should instead use that money to improve their own product and compete fairly. Obviously, that didn’t happen, the merger went through, and Facebook is still the owner of Instagram. Users and the tech industry at large are worse off.

Look at TikTok’s huge success. If they weren’t a Chinese company, they probably would have met a similar fate. Unfortunately for Facebook, they weren’t allowed to buy a Chinese company.

And people are now getting emails saying that their phone will never arrive, with no mention of them getting their deposits back.

Antitrust regulation is probably the easiest way to fix the biggest problems in our society, it is 100% bipartisan, and it is easy to explain to the average US voter. The only group that is against it is the billionaires/ultra wealthy. Instead, politicians are all hyperfocused on culture war mudslinging and bullshit that makes no difference.

Break up Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta (just to start), and watch how the tech industry explodes with innovation again, and the tech billionaire becomes an endangered species. The AI bubble will burst as companies actually need to compete to survive, and thus won’t be burning as much resources on crap that clearly doesn’t work.

In many ways. This document provides a detailed overview of Graphene’s unique features, and is worth a skim even if you’re unfamiliar with some of the jargon.

My very reductive summary is that Lineage is primarily focused on reviving and bringing modern features to old devices, whereas Graphene is focused on hardening the security of AOSP as much as possible.

Both are de-Googled. Lineage is good for e-waste prevention, but not security. You will never be able to secure a device that can’t receive kernel updates because the OEM abandoned it, and “state actors” are certainly not the only people who can exploit those vulnerabilities.

This is nonsense. Everyone needs the most secure phone possible, especially considering it’s the only device some people will ever own. None of the other de-Googled offerings come close to the security features that Graphene offers, some of which are custom built solutions. They go above and beyond what the typical ROM does, which is why it even supports a lot of banking apps that would normally be blocked.

There’s a good reason people talk about GrapheneOS a lot lately, and not any of the many alternative Android ROMs that exist.

I agree with you, but I get where the rabid fanboyism is coming from. The lack of competition in tech due to a variety of bullshit reasons (mostly corruption, look what Biden’s FTC was trying to do compared to Trump 2’s mask-off approach) have people pissed off and angry at the monopolists. Valve just so happens to be the least-bad monopolist in tech, so people like them.

People need to get competition-pilled, so they realize that Valve isn’t our savior, and are in fact part of the problem too. They might be considered “good” today, but that’s because our standards have never been so low.

I disagree. Secretly recording someone with a phone is much easier than doing it with one of these. It’s the same issue people had with Google Glass back in the day.

I think the reason it feels creepier is because, if you’re talking with someone that’s wearing them, it feels like they’re sticking a camera in your face.

But like I could turn on my phone camera, leave it sticking out of my pocket, and record everyone taking a piss in a public restroom with nobody noticing. If I tried to do that with glasses, I’d have to turn my head towards everyone’s cock, one at a time. The neck pain alone makes it not worth the effort.
