If you’ve got the disposable income for it, yes, it’s a great device. The value isn’t as great since the price increases, but the slowing market also means hardware at that level will stay relevant much longer.

More powerful handhelds have come out since, but I agree on not putting too much focus on the numbers. Most comparisons seem to miss how important ergonomics and UX are for actually using devices like this, and nobody else seems to have figured those out quite to the degree Valve has.

That said, the power is still enough for a lot of people to play AAA games with it. I’m a bit too spoiled by easy, frequent access to better hardware to quite enjoy that myself, but I can see myself still using it as a AA/indie/backlog machine for many years.

Funnily enough, I find NYC and Tokyo to be the least masturbatory targets for off-world interest.

NYC makes sense as a combined seat of international politics (see the UN building), economic power (largest GDP by city and Wall Street seeing 2/3rds of all public trade), and genetic representation for humanity (Queens being the most ethnically and linguistically diverse urban area on the planet).

Tokyo makes sense as the world’s most populous metropolitan area and highest GDP by metropolitan area.

So, aliens scanning the planet or the Internet or whatever and thinking “we need to go here first” for either location is believable to me in an objective sense.

It also helps that there is often some background lore adding to why a particular location is important, which also includes explanations for Earth itself being important on a cosmic scale, though how masturbatory those explanations feel is highly variable.

Wow, I’m really glad this topic came up. As a recent convert from Windows, it’s still muscle memory for me to yank out a flash drive as soon as the copy dialog completes. (Yes, I know ejecting a drive first is still the proper thing to do on Windows, but skipping that has not been an issue once in hundreds of cases.)

It’s basically everything of importance or interest to me accumulated over at least a couple decades originally bookmarked in Firefox, migrated to Chrome, then later migrated back to Firefox.

There’s work stuff, recipes, tutorials, videos, music, game mods, character builds, resources saved for family and friends, recommendations, billing reminders, etc. I also use it as a more organized YouTube watchlist.

I’m sure I could knock out 75% of my bookmarks without it being a problem, but they’re organized well enough that there’s little benefit to pruning it all.

Bookmarks in mobile Firefox is another issue. Bookmark management is a massive chore. I end up keeping tabs around a lot longer in mobile just to avoid messing with it.

On desktop Firefox with the Bookmark Tab Here extension (native functionality I missed from Chrome), bookmarking and organizing a new page is just two clicks. I use that workflow extensively. Apparently I have over 7000 bookmarks all organized that way.

Yeah, it really sucks, because LLM tech itself is amazing. Quantifying language and ideas into what’s basically a massive queryable concept map is a huge achievement. What do the tech giants decide to do with that achievement? Shove it every little place it doesn’t belong making everyone hate it.

Oh well, I’ll keep backing up the interesting local open-source models people make and playing with them in the corner.

I think LLMs are an interesting technology. Of course, the output is inherently untrustworthy, and that rules out a ton of applications tech bros are trying to cram it into.

Possibly, but the AI they’ve got doing it is just bad. Even liking an innocuous comment like “you’re killing it, dude” is apparently enough to get banned.

I say there’s no reason to be hostile to someone still on Reddit. I check here first for most things, but there are many communities whose presence here is either anemic or nonexistent.

Then again, Reddit has always been a desktop first experience for me. I pretty much only use old.reddit.com, and my line in the sand will probably be when it dies.

I cycle through phrases just because language variety also matters. I’m fighting myself not to edit a recent comment because I used “still” twice in one sentence. Lol.

Lol. I use hedging terms constantly, because I’m autistic and precision in language matters to me. 99% certainty is still enough uncertainty to justify a “likely.” I’m not planning to change that even if more and more people think my writing is AI.

Even having high-end enthusiast hardware, I want those devices as the baseline too. Whatever optimizations they do still apply over the whole hardware spectrum.

Also, you can technically say 2030 is less than 4 years away if you want to traumatize old people. Lol.

They’re not stock, but both GIMP and Krita have had generative AI plugins for a couple years now. I don’t know how well they match up to the Adobe stuff, but they seemed quite powerful and well-integrated the last time I looked.

I’m not OP, but thanks for spelling that out. I guess I must have seen a bunch of tech stuff from that instance starting out. I was under the impression it was started by Machine Learning enthusiasts. Lol.
