Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•NYT hiding information regarding a health related food recall behind a paywallEnglish
105·1 day agoDon’t downvote him; he’s right. The next administration should fund Voice of America (VOA) and PBS to provide free information. The NYT is a for-profit organization.
Long before the internet, we had to buy newspapers. I don’t like it, but that’s the reality of business.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI bet goes awry: Oracle fires 21,000 employeesEnglish
643·2 days agoChinese open-source models are becoming the norm. You don’t need the latest model from ChatGPT (e.g., a Ferrari) to complete your task. A simple Honda will suffice (open-source models), and it uses a lot less energy since it runs on your home or company’s infrastructure.
Because of that, I predict that we’re going to see a lot of financial hardship among AI companies.

501·21 days agoThe author of the blog is living in dreamland. Microsoft will never release Windows Lite because, to management, Windows is a conduit for AI and subscriptions.
Linux is the answer.
Downside: breaking changes are fairly common AFAIK.
This is no longer the case after the version 2.0 release. Version 2.0 is the stable release: https://github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions/22546

3·22 days agoPublic-facing services need at least a minimum level of security protection. All of my services are protected by the reverse proxy Caddy, and Crowdsec protects my system and services from malicious bots. My Flirt 2’s firewall bans all malicious bots that Crowdsec discovers.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•TV Time is coming to an end, alternatives?English
31·23 days agoInteresting:
The company blamed the expense of running the platform as a reason behind the decision, **but a shift to a more AI-focused business seems to be the real culprit. **
article: https://techcrunch.com/2026/07/02/popular-tv-tracking-app-tv-time-is-shutting-down-as-company-focuses-on-ai/

In my opinion, AI is here to stay. But OpenAI and Anthropic will suffer because companies realized that don’t need a Ferarri all the time, they can do with a Honda (Chinese open-source models) 90% of the time.
