yeah but does no one recall “The Internet Gaming Zone”? sure they made good games but if you wanted to play those games online with ease on PC then hope your PC came with IE or you had a decent modem to then download IE if your PC only came with Netscape.

One of the first decent PCs my parents bought in like '97 only came with Netscape. it was shortly after the time when the US Government said Microsoft can’t force every Windows Install to include IE. so some PC makers decided to go with Netscape instead. IE was a big download for the time too so imagine trying to download that on a 28.8 modem. took all day just to play X-wing Vs Tie Fighter or Age of Empires online because unless you knew the IP of the person you wanted to play and they knew yours you weren’t playing online.

So yes Microsoft has made good games for Windows but they’ve always been shitty about it.

extremely low hanging fruit. I travel a lot for work and all my laptops have VPNs with encrypted DNS. Even had to set that up on one of my FreeBSD installs (which was a god damn pain and with the shit wifi on that there really wasn’t much of a point at the end of the day).

it’s even more mandatory for places that have NO captive portals. Those connections are opening themselves up to a can of worms. Looking at you Union Station in Toronto Canada. seriously, fix your shit. One of the biggest transit hubs in all of Canada and their wifi is completely 100% open.

for now the various safereddit instances still work. only issue you’ll have with that is video can lag but you have to cut the people who run these instances some slack, in fact a lot of slack, as they have to CONSTANTLY update.

I recently saw a video of Zuckerberg being interviewed by Theo Von and I honestly thought it was AI slop at first. The way he sits, talks, even moves his head it’s like he’s constantly under interrogation. His initial claim to fame, prior to FB, at least on college campus’ was making a “hot or not” clone utilizing photos from various Harvard facebooks. Every idea since then has been someone elses or he’s tried to take the Apple approach of “let someone else do it first, then we improve on it” except he has never been able to nail down the second part. The only reason FB became successful was the initial exclusivity and it filled the gap of a post 20-something myspace/ICQ/AOL IM world.

so August 4th they’ll announce he’s dead. the funeral will be interesting to say the least. that body is probably a popiscle full of god knows what chemicals to prevent decomposing or he’s already buried.

It’s just cable with Tivo. you can pause, rewind, all crap. WWE was the test case (it’s like the TV version of the porn industry) so now they’ll woo over other cable networks and sporting events. they really don’t though, especially developers. doing dev work on NixOS for example is like night and day compared to everything else. I can’t imagine now not getting work done without NixOS. flakes and stuff just make every build so incredibly easy and because of which no matter where I put the thing I know it’s going to work.

Even gaming, outside of a few games, works flawlessly. Hell even pirating now works fairly well. Emulation too. I can pick which cores I want via my gaming nix module and it’s all good to go. it’s great.

As someone who did AOL Tech Support way back in the early 00s this does not surprise me at all. Hell it wouldn’t surprise me if a few of those customers are still paying for dialup without even knowing it. We’d get calls like that all the time. We’d also get calls all the time for tech issues not even related to AOL. We had to stay on the line with them regardless. so they’d mention some easy to fix AOL issue AND THEN dive into the REAL reason they were calling…and we had to tech support it, even our tools supported it. was a nightmare/horrible job.

what DE/WM are you using? is it wayland based? I know sometimes if xwayland messes up it’ll result in stuff like steam, discord, games, etc just showing a blank screen/see through to the desktop.

VPN’s can be hit or miss depending on what IP you connect to. I’m in Canada, usually connect to a Canadian VPN with a chain of IPs out of Montreal and it’s hit or miss. either I can view reddit or it blocks me due to the VPN.

Safereddit/redlib works for now and has gotten better. only issue still is video playback lags but that’s understandable.
