We rented an apartment for 5 months after listing our house for sale because we didn’t want to have to clean it and leave the house fora few hours every time someone wanted to come do a viewing.

In our defense… we had a 3yr old, a hairy dog, and were preparing to leave the country permanently, which took 10 months of nonstop preparation on top of working full time, so I still think it was worth the money to save us the extra work. But yeah, probably the laziest thing I’ve done.

Interesting. No, I hadn’t heard about that… but I do think it’s likely to happen. I think there will come a time, within the next 20 years, where you’re either dirt poor (financially) or you’re a human-AI hybrid.

Personally, I’m preparing for life as a farmer/forager, because I have no interest in merging with AI and I know there are more important things in life than money.

Addiction to money is causing 95% of our problems, and I don’t just mean Zuckerberg and the other billionaires. Anyone who throws a coworker under the bus to avoid taking blame, pressures a subordinate to work an extra hour to meet a deadline, or otherwise prioritizes “work” over the mental health of those around them contributes to this dumpster fire of a society we’ve built.

We all point the finger at the top, but I think the problem is much more widespread than that.

Generally, the term “open source” refers to software. Are you asking about the software that controls ATMs, or the physical machine?

Either way, the answer is probably no, but the reason will differ depending on what your question is.

American here who just immigrated to Japan with my Japanese spouse and mixed child 2 months ago. We left for our family’s safety, and are very happy with the decision.

I will say though: if you don’t have any Japanese family members moving with you, living in Japan can be very difficult. I have JLPT N1 certification, have lived and worked here for 6 years previously, and am very comfortable speaking/reading/writing Japanese, but I wouldn’t try to live here long term without my spouse… it’s just… tough. People here have never been terribly welcoming of non-Japanese, and with the recent surge in popularity of the openly anti-immigrant Sanseito party (gained 13 seats in the upper house last year), it’s not looking great for us foreigners here.

Still, for US, this felt like the safer option compared to the states right now.

I know this isn’t a cut and clear answer to your question, but just hoping I can provide some context from personal experience to help you make an educated decision for own unique situation.

Personally, I think your parents should be allowed to make their own decision about what religion and/or spirituality they want to adopt.

The reason they’re gravitating toward the religion is likely because the divorce has left them with an emotional hole. They’re finding love and compassion in the message of the religion, and probably some more compassion and companionship from fellow members of the religion.

While the message from the leaders may well be a ruse to hook people and get their money, the perceived benefits and actual fellowship are going to be hard for you to compete with. Especially so if you’re approaching it from the “all of you are batshit crazy” angle.

I think if you really want to help your parent, the best option would be to find a way to provide them even more love, compassion, and companionship than the church gives them. Then they might consider listening to your opinions on organized religion at some point later down the line after they’ve had time to heal from the emotional trauma that comes with divorce. This may also be a good strategy to help yourself if you’re feeling affected by the change too.

Moved to Japan for my son and the difference is night and day. People here are shocked and disgusted when I tell them what I ate for school lunches as a kid.

What I did:

Deleted the app. I still go directly to the subreddit pages I want to see (in a browser), but without logging in, and without ever looking at the home feed.

I haven’t commented on Reddit or used the app in months now. TBH, I’m even annoyed I have to go over there for my niche subs, because I hate the advertisements. I really do enjoy lemmy more than Reddit now.

I’ve set up a few gitlab servers at companies and it’s always been well received. Doing it from scratch may be more complex than you want, but I think there are docker images for a more turnkey type solution. And the option of building CI/CD pipelines in the future is always nice to have.

I was afraid my comment might come across this way, and it appears it has to some. I have not given up at all. I’m actually enjoying life right now more than I have in a very long time, despite all the chaos around us.

When I say “I wouldn’t mind it,” I don’t mean it like “just go ahead and end the misery,” I mean I’m just not super attached to this life. I believe in reincarnation, and that when we die we have a life review and then return to being one with the universe/god/source until our next life. I’m excited to see what the next step is like.
