Montessori style education works very well for certain learning types, but often under-supports others and can suffer from poor implementation just like any other educational model. One-on-one is far superior for some students, and that will never not be the case.
That does suggest the profit motive specifically works against the best interests of both students and teachers such that any “fit for purpose” platform is going to suffer from ill-conceived feature creep. Any suggestions on that front? I can already hear the howls of corporate overlords and political fiscal hawks at the suggestion of publicly funding such a platform.

If I read it right it’s effectively two aluminum heat sinks sandwiching an insulating foam. Outer sink takes on the ambient heat signature, inner sink keeps heat trapped internally, and the insulating layer resists thermal transfer between the two zones. That said, I have to assume someone’s tried that before and they’re just doing it… better?
They were legitimately that bad for the most part. Some were better than others of course, but the best of them were closer to a bad nursing home. The worst were legitimate atrocities. You didn’t put someone there to get better. Those who did were the rarest of exceptions, and were people whose problems had more to do with unhealthy environments. You put people in an asylum to keep them contained.
It’s important to remember, psychology is a relatively young discipline. Historically the best mental counseling was folk wisdom and religion. People had all kinds of ideas, often grounded more in superstition than any kind of demonstrable, repeatable evidence (a problem which unfortunately persists in the field, though it’s getting better). Asylums were more like dubious research labs than medical facilities and the mentally ill were closer to lab rats. Caged lab rats.
The field still has a long way to go, there’s still a lot we don’t know that’s out there to learn, but the methods and techniques are a lot better than they used to be. A lot better.
There’s a lot of reasons not to like Regan, but he did get some things right. That was one of them.
My condolences
All of this, but I will also add that at least part of it is because the Roman Empire already had a pretty strong administrative hegemony to work from in the the eastern empire because it consisted of the leftover rump states from the fall of the Hellenic (Greek) Empire under Alexander the Great. The existence of a unifying Greek administrative class (the infamous Byzantine Bureaucracy of which much ink has been spilled) made it viable to simply leave Greek as the administrative language of the east. Where they had to build their own institutional infrastructure from the ground up in the west which made the association with Latin as the language of leadership far easier, it was far less ubiquitous in the east where most officials outside the governor’s inner circle spoke Greek.

Yeah. Has been for a long time friend. ICE stopping charter or even city busses to round up working people and make them prove they’re citizens just because they happen to be within 100 miles of a border is practically a cliche at this point. Any international airport, shipping port, etc. works the same way. They operate on guilty until proven innocent, and if you are proven innocent, they’ll invent a reason you’re not anyway.
All news is biased. Every time someone writes something down, it has a perspective to it that provides a selective view of the truth. There’s no such thing as purely objective. The closest you can get is to aggregate multiple sources on any news worth your time. I find Ground News useful for this because it makes it convenient to look at multiple sources sorted by bias and then draw your own conclusion. Rather than trusting people not to make a straw-man out of opposing views it helps to hear what people actually think in their own words. You might even learn something, although I know no one really enjoys finding out their opponent actually has a point.
Yes, this has been discussed extensively, since coal was the fuel of the day. Non-renewable fuel is by definition finite. It’s one of many issues with fossil fuels.

I guess technically it’s slightly more than half, but the real limiting factor in the market is that regardless of species, most female primates won’t buy sexual favours. That’s not to say there isn’t a market for male “prostitutes”, just that their target demographic is a bit… niche, as is the demographic of those who would be willing to offer those services.

Yes. Like sexual predators they’re more common than people like to admit and I’ve had the displeasure of knowing a few. Also like sexual predators, living like they’re ubiquitous instead of taking out the trash is not the best way to deal with them.
I’ll grant it’s an automation issue. Age verification is always identity verification when it’s automated. It doesn’t matter how much you try to scrub the data. If it has to be done algorithmically, there’s no possible circumstance where an unaccountable third party should have that data.
A government that’s that untrustworthy, doesn’t deserve to exist.
At what cost? How many have lost hope and worse because the only thing they found in the noise of the internet was hate? Or worse, someone profiteering or exploiting their isolation?
At what ratio do we acknowledge that the “cure” is at least as bad as the disease. Could we even get reliable numbers on that given it’s all on private platforms that have every reason to lie? Facebook is responsible for igniting at least one genocide. How many more before it’s too many?
That’s just publicly funding with extra layers of separation from politicians though. I’m fully behind such a plan, but I do have some concerns:
FOSS works great for the core layers, but lets be honest with ourselves for a minute, engineers suck at building interfaces that make sense to users, particularly children, and interface designers are expensive. Also I love FOSS hardware… as an enthusiast. Distribution at scale, durability, and so on are also going to be a challenge, and no having “Joe down the street with a 3D printer throw something together” is not the same as having professionally manufactured PCBs.
Vulnerability to embrace-extend-extinguish, situations like where a “Non-Profits” end up being converted to a for-profit through shady shit, means we’re going to need legal defences and people with uncommon character coordinating the project.
The nature of the modern political sphere is not conducive to plans where there isn’t a billionaire’s toady in a suit wining and dining the school board members and offering political kickbacks to run with that platform. The platform is the easy part compared to the task of getting sufficient adoption to make it viable.
These are all solvable problems but the scale of the team needed to accomplish it would be… significant. It’s achievable, but it’s not going to be easy or quick.
